opening windows from a shortcut on my desktop ...
Often results in just the window border showing up, and nothing inside the
window; just absolutely blank and transparent. Have to log off and back on,
or restart, to fix it. Now I have to do this several times a day.

I have the latest certified Vista drivers from NVidia, 2G RAM, any ideas
what's causing this? It's getting very frustrating. Any and all help will be
appreciated.

Event Viewer doesn't show up when I search for it. Nothing related to
"event" shows up in fact.

A screenshot of the problem can be seen at http://johnhightower.blogspot.com
if that helps.

It should. However, go to Help and Support and search for Event Viewer.

There is a obvious problem... water has gotten into your machine ;-)

Seriously though - you need to find those event logs...

Does the nVidia card have its own memory or is it sharing with main system
memory?

Are the nVidia drivers listed at the nVidia site as fully functional and
final or are they still beta drivers; is there a link at the nVidia site
from which you downloaded the drivers to a site where you can post issues
you are having as you may need to do that. They are still having a lot of
trouble with their drivers and this issue may need to be reported to them.

Event Viewer is under Administrative Tools either on the Start Menu or in
Control Panel.

Re: opening windows from a shortcut on my desktop ...
Someone really needs to come up with a foolproof description of how to
access the Event Viewer...

Its own RAM. The drivers are listed on their site as certified. But thanks
for the heads up about the site to post issues; I'll take a look at it.
