Downloads folder - very strange problem
I wonder if anyone else has experienced this?:

I did a clean installation of Vista Home Premium. All my old XP data I'd
copied onto my external hard drive ready to copy over to Vista. Included in
this was all my downloaded software programs which I had saved in a "My
Downlaods" folder. I copied these across into the "Downloads" folder in
Vista without a problem. However whenever I come to run an install.exe or
setup.exe file from this folder I just get an error message saying that the
program can't continue. The strange thing being is that I can run them OK
from my external drive!!!

Anyone any ideas why this is happening and how I might cure it???

Re: Downloads folder - very strange problem
Vista may be confused as to the 'Owner' of files transferred over from
another OS.
Take ownership of the files/folder in question and they should run.
Right click/Properties/Security Tab/Advanced Button/Owner Tab/Edit Button.
If you intend to keep these files exclusive to Vista, and you see an odd
account listed such as:
Account Unknown (S-blahblah long number), you can remove that account--it's
the old XP.

Re: Downloads folder - very strange problem
Thanks Max

I'll try that.

However what I forgot to say was that I've also downloded software direct
into the "Downloads" folder on Vista and have the same problem when trying
to install!! I have to copy them onto the external drive to run setup /
install!
