Disabled Create Restore Point?
In trying to create a restore point, I get told that "Restore point creation
disabled by Group Policy", and the "Create" button is grayed out.
I've not used group policy at all! Anybody know what's going on, and how to
enable that button?
Thanks!

Well, I figured out the answer to my own question. Here's a quiz for you:
to enable the group policy editor, I ran "gpedit.msc" as an administrator.
Down about a million menus, it is a group policy entitled "Disable System
Restore". There are three settings available: Not Configured, Enabled,
Disabled.
The quiz: which setting is the appropriate one that gives the back my
ability to create a restore point?
Here's a hint: it makes no sense whatsoever!

Disable
"Disable System Restore". Have you ever heard of a double negative?

MS is FAMOUS for double-negatives in the registry. You just learn to deal with
it!!

Bzzzzz! Thanks for Playing. Neither Enable nor Disable worked. Try playing
in Round Two,where the prize money *really* grows......
"Not Configured" works.
Huh?

Re: Disabled Create Restore Point?
Hello Ross,
If the 'Not Configured' setting now works and you are able to use Sytem
Restore, it has reset the registry to default. What puzzles me is why it
went wonky in the first place? An unspecified *something* may have
corrupted the registry possibly?

Jane, not plain 64 bit enabled :-)

Re: Disabled Create Restore Point?
I too had a unspecified 'something' create this imaginary Group Policy
comepletely out of the blue.
Alas, gpedit.msc does not exist in Vista Home Premium (so the above solution
was a no go), nor was I able to access any tweaks within msconfig > Services
or services.msc to clear this 'Group Policy'.
HP Support offered many suggestions - none worked - and the final upshot was
that they recommended the inevitable full OS install, the last refuge of the
technically confused and something I would only do as an option to a
self-applied lobotomy.
But then, digging around elsewhere on the 'net, there were other references
to this problem and, in one, an offhand comment about various prepackaged
'tweak' programs - and that got me to thinking....
Downloaded Totalidea's free TweakVI Basic, let it install and set up the
'restore and 'snapshots' and then dug around in it. Nothing immediately
obvious there in regards to this problem, but I did set a few (I thought)
unrelaed tweaks, rebooted and....
The Group Policy had been cleared and I've now got access to creating manual
restore points again!
Nope. No idea why - but for free and 5 minutes of setup I was able to do
something that HP Support couldn't AND prevent me from having to do an OS
install.
Fluke? Maybe , but just to let you know...

No, it was done by "VistaMagic", right?
