Help! Internet transfer speed has dropped to nothing under Vista

I've been running Vista for a couple of months and, other than needing to
keep my system as a dual-boot for gaming and other compatibility issues, I've
experienced no problems at all. I really love the new system and use it for
pretty much everything except gaming.

Until just recently that is. My transfer speeds to/from the Internet have
dropped to almost nothing. Web pages themselves seem to appear fairly quickly
but I can't download files from anywhere, even high bandwidth sites like
download.com. I can't send email with attachments because the transfers
always time out even on emails as small as 400k!

I went to dslreports.com and ran some speed tests and found I'm averaging
about 165kbps where I used to average about 1200kbps. My data transfer rate
averages about 22kb/sec where it used to be around 140kb/sec. These are even
slow for my uploads because my uploads used to be faster than this.

When I reboot and launch my XP operating system, everything is fine. Super
speed. Downloads are no problem. This has just popped up in the last week or
so and I have no idea what may have caused it.

Has anyone else experienced any similar issues? Does anyone have any ideas
what I may try short of a reinstall? Thanks in advance to anyone who might be
able to help.

I'm having the same problem except that mine has never gone at a realistic
speed since I installed Vista. It is unusable like it is and pretty much
always boot to XP now cause this Vista is usless like this. I am unable to
download flash players, windows updates (i did eventually after several hours
for 23mb).

Roll back the driver for your network interface card.


I had the same situation. Was LOVING Vista, and everything working fine,
then about a week ago, I suddenly had an unusable slow internet throughput
on a cable broadband connection. I tried everything -- and I mean
everything -- EXCEPT looking at the drivers for my NIC. In frustration, I
reinstalled Vista. My super-fast throughput returned -- UNTIL I allowed
Update to update my Realtek something-something NIC with drivers that had
just recently been released. I rolled back the updated drivers, and solved
the problem.

I hope this helps you. Please let us know if it does or doesn't, because
we're seeing a lot of complaints about terribly slow throughput.

If I recall correctly, my small wired and wireless home network throughput
was never affected -- only internet throughput. Also, if you discover that
this works for you, remember to "hide this update" (or whatever terminology
appears) in the Optional Updates list so that it won't happen again.

Thank u so much Brian. This problem has been annoying me for so long i just
booted to XP. I clicked when you said you have realtek network card and i
realised i have one too. But instead of rolling back drivers which didnt work
i just changed it all together. Works well now, Thanks a lot!

Brian,

Thanks so much for your help. I had a feeling this was going to be the
answer when I saw "Realtek". That's the brand of the nic built onto my mobo.
As soon as I rolled the driver back, everything returned to normal. I've dl
the Realtek drivers from update in the past and never experienced any ill
affects. I guess they just got something wrong this time.

In my Vista computer that has happened also, but my network card is a CNET
200Pro, who doesn't is supported by Vista, I had to install the drivers in
WinXP compatibitily mode and the problem remains

I recall on a recent update, the Realtek NIC driver was updated. I can't say
that I've seen a huge difference, but may just not have noticed it.

How would I go about rolling back just the NIC driver? I don't particularly
want to do system restore, as other things have changed as well. And I have
no idea what NIC driver was used originally.

Rick,

If you haven't recognized a severe decrease in throughput, your situation is
probably not the same as mine and the original poster. I recognized his
timing and symptoms as identical to mine.

But it won't hurt anything to roll back a driver, because you can roll it
back again (unroll it, ha?).

Search in Help on the keywords "driver roll back." But again, if it ain't
broke -- don't fix it. As always, please let us know your results.
