Can't get Vista Machine on my office network..

I had my XP machine and my Mac G5 on my office network, I could share
folders, access each machine on the other, everything.

After Vista Ultimate upgrade, I cannot get either to talk, not on the
network, via shared folders, nothing...

Any advice on how to get them connected? Thanks!!

I'm assuming the G5 is running some version of OS X and I'm assuming
you've got sharing set up correctly since it worked with XP. I'm also
assuming that you set up network sharing in Vista but it just isn't
working. I just went through this with not being able to even see my
MacBook from Vista. This will make it all better:

Start>Run>secpol.msc [enter]

Click on "Local Policies">"Security Options"

Navigate to the policy "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication
level" and double-click it to get its Properties. By default Windows
Vista sets the policy to "NTVLM2 responses only". Use the drop-down
arrow to change this to "LM and NTLM – use NTLMV2 session security if
negotiated".

OK...let me just say...THIS WORKED! I followed the steps and now my PC and
Mac are on speaking terms again...thank you Malke!!!

p.s. for other users..in vista the run menu is no longer on the start menu -
so just search for "secpol.msc" and then double click it

I have the same problem as the initial post.

I assume the secpol.msc is to be typed in on the Vista machine - is this
correct? If so, I did this and get a pop a box stating windows cannot find
'secpol.msc'. Make sure you typed the name correctly............

Any advice? Vista Home Premium preinstalled on HP desktop. HP support was
no help.

That's because Home versions don't have secpol. You will need to do this
manually in the Registry:

1. Run the registry editor and open this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa

1. If it doesn't already exist, create a DWORD value named
LmCompatibilityLevel

3. Set the value to 1

4. Reboot

I tried this and rebooted, initially it did not work. Then I went to the
public folder and the family folder and opened their properties in two
separate windows and made everything identical in both. After this it worked
on the other computers. I don't know if changing the value did it, making
all properties in the folders alike, or a combo of both.......but it has
ended hours upon hours of frustration! Thank you. The registry value is
still set to 1 by the way.
