I am suffering from the same issue, except that I did a clean install, then
reloaded some files with doc/pics back onto the computer. I have one file in
particular that is on my desktop now that I can't delete, it won't allow me
to delete or open the one subfolder it has in it iether; previously, when I
tried to delete the main file itself, it removed all subfolders except this
one-- the one it won't even let me open... HELP, what am I doing wrong?

One way might be to go into "Safe Mode" and delete it. There is a
slight danger in that. IF it contains some links in those files or
folders to legacy items it could be a problem. Another I encounted
while running the Vista RC1 version I needed to go into safe mode to
delete Norton Anti Virus. Vista RC1 uninstall could not stop it since
it was not compatable with Vista. When I got down in Safe Mode the OS
wanted the Administrators password. I knew what that was. I had it
written down from a long time ago... BUT that password would not
work. It took me two afternoons to discover the password was.... my
full name with no space between the words. I haveNEVER used that for a
password. You might could set a "Restore" point and try it but I am
not sure if "System Restore" works during Safe Mode.

I went the upgrade route to from XP Pro to Vista Ultimate. I found
the same thing on my system. Seems ALL folders with the old XP "My * "
are still showing and have been replaced by folders named Documents,
Videos, Pictures and ect. The old folders are there but you cannot do
anything with them. You get an error message telling you that you do
not have rights access to them. I saw a post somewhere that the old
folders contain links to the new folders the upgrade created when you
access them. All the more reason I should have done a clean install.
I can only imagine the spyder web of files and tracks that are all
over the installation of Vista in an upgrade process. I knew the road
was going to be bumpy but it is a lot rougher than some of the
articles I read prasing the upgrade version.

A clean install would have made no difference. Those junctions are there
for legacy application support. Without them many older programs would
fail, as they don't know about the new folder structure in Vista.
