Media Center 2005 to Vista Media Center Compatibility
I am looking at purchasing a Vista Home Premium laptop. I currently have a
HP Entertainment PC desktop running Windows xp Media Center 2005 which I use
to record TV shows from satellite. I want to know if I can transfer recorded
TV shows from my xp desktop to a new Vista Home Premium laptop and watch them
on Vista's Media Center.

If you network the 2 computers & share the recordings, yes. Otherwise you
will have to burn to dvd to play on another computer.

Can I put the data files on a DVD, or will it require me to burn to a video
DVD?

You can do it either way. Any unprotected content can be moved from PC to PC
with no problems...the problem is protected content (most HBO, Showtime,
etc) will only show on the first MCE, unless you rigged it as a watched
folder on the second PC...
