You could try sticking some other thing in it and maybe that will fix it.

Re: Microphone Wont Connect

The audio card on your computer can detect what is plugged into the
different audio ports. It does this to try and make configuring your
computer for something like 5.1 or 7.1 audio output easier. To make
sure it is configuring things they way -you- want it to be configured,
it gives you the pop-up to verify it guessed correctly.

You should be able to turn that back on in the Audio configuration
portion of the Control Panel in Windows. Since I don't know which
Inspiron model you have I can't give you the exact location at this
time, but it is almost guaranteed to be a checkbox that says somethign
like, "prompt me to verify connected device" or something similar.

If you have other questions on this I'll be happy to answer them.

Re: Microphone Wont Connect

Ok I've found a way to sort it, I created the guest account, then pluged
the microphone in while logged onto Guest. It then asked what it was i
had plugged in. I chose microphone, then relogged into my main account,
and the microphone was still working, so all is good

Re: Microphone Wont Connect

For Dell Inspiron owners (possibly others as well) operating Windows
Vista:

If your microphone stopped working or you find that your microphone is
not working when you clicked the "Don't show me this again" box on the
pop up window (popup is called audio system event) then chances are you
are using SigmaTel audio drivers.

To get the microphone popup window back so your microphone can start
working again you need to go to start >> Control Panel >> SigmaTel Audio
and click the box that says "Allow reconfiguration Pop-Ups". Go through
all of Vista's OMG DO YOU WANT TO DO THAT crap and then unplug and
replug your mic. The pop up should return and your mic will work once
again.

This worked for me. I hope it helps others as this was especially
frustrating.
