I agree it is a major pain but that's the way it is. According to Microsoft
it's by design. It was a bad design decision as far as I'm concerned. I was
told it was done that way for two reasons: security, and speed. For security
it could be controlled by a group policy that allowed or disallowed
displaying local and domain names. Same thing for speed. Apparently in large
networks with possibly slow links it may take a long time display a logon
screen as different domains are enumerated. In the few cases where this
happens they are already using group policy so I don't see the problem with
a group policy that allows/disallows the feature.
