Problem With Desktop Icons In Vista
I have a couple of DOS programs that have desktop shortcuts. I am having a
problem with the icon that is displayed on the desktop. I went to the
properties dialog -> program tab -> change icon and entered the proper icon
file. This icon shows up fine in the program page of the properties dialog,
but a default blank page icon shows up on the General page and on the desktop.

Any suggestions on solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Rick,

Try this:

Right Click on the icon
Left Click 'Properties'
Left Click 'Change Icon'
Find out where the icon you want is in relation to the one you get (i.e.:
the one you get is two columns to the right of what you want.)
Left Click on the icon two columns to the LEFT of what you want
Left Click 'OK'
Left Click 'Apply'
Left Click "OK'

If that doesn't work try a few others and see if you see a pattern.

If that works but the icon you want is in the first two columns, I don't
have a solution for you.

Why do we still need these under Vista ?
Are there no modern alternatives today ?

Thanks for the info, but it doesn't appear to be a problem with the
size of the icon (or icon cache), but instead with the extension of the
file I'm trying to change the icon on.
I can change the icon on .bat and .com files but not on .exe files. On
the .exe files. the icon shows correctly in the properties box but not
on the desktop.

Re: Problem With Desktop Icons In Vista
If we're talking about changing icons on the actual .exe file, I can't help
you. If we're talking about Desktop shortcut icons for .exe files, then the
only suggestions I have are to decrease your icon size (I'm using 25 points),
and checking Read-only under the General tab of Properties. If we're talking
internet address Desktop shortcuts, make a link file as described in the
tutorial and the designated icon will not be changed. I'm sorry if this
doesn't solve your problem, I don't know what else to do. If you find a
solution, please post it here so we can all benefit.

Re: Problem With Desktop Icons In Vista

Not trying to change the icon on the .exe itself, just on the desktop
shortcut. Not sure why it'll change on a .bat and .com, but not on a
.exe.

Tried different size icons (16x16, 32x32, 128x128) but still no luck.

My work around is to run the .exe file out of a batch (.bat) file.
Then I can set whatever icon I want on the batch file.

It's just odd that you can change icons on some files, but not others.
Perhaps it's another "feature" of Vista.............
