More Sleep/Wake problems

OK, the scenario, computer of current specs (i975X, dual core, Corsair DDR2,
GeForce 7800GTX, all current drivers "Vista versions" Motherboard flashed to
latest BIOS)

I send the computer to sleep. I can't wake it up.

Iny my motherboard BIOS there are various "wake up" triggers which can be
set, like PS2 Mouse, PS2 Keyboard.

Regrettably I thought I was being modern with USB versions (ironically both
Microsoft branded.) But whilst the computer will happily go to sleep at the
softest touch of the SLEEP button on the keyboard, nothing but holding the
POWER button on the chassis for 10 seconds to force a complete POWER OFF will
induce any response other than a nicely winking blue LED to tell me the PC is
sleeping soundly.

I have similar difficulties getting my son to wake up in the morning, but I
kind of expect that.

Has anyone managed to "crack" this problem of not being able to wake their
PC? Or is this something that maybe will be fixed quietly in the background
by Windows Update maybe sneakily sliding in a change to the power management
side of Vista to perhaps prevent only allowing a computer to go to a state of
sleep that it can't actually support for one reason or another.

I vote we rename it from SLEEP to COMA.

Any hints/tips/guidance beyond the normal BIOS flashing, driver updating
ones would be appreicated, and please, nobody suggest I go buy a PS2
keyboard. Please.

I second that vote.
My sound doesnt work after prolonged hibernation/sleep (1hr) it's sooooo
anoying. i sypethsis to your case and i think that MS should fix these
issues.

I thought an Asus i975X chipset motherboard would have been considered
reasonably new, but alas it seems it may not be.

Actually one thing I did notice on this motherboard is that power is NOT
maintained to the USB ports when the computer is either in SLEEP/COMA mode or
turned off, the last three motherboards I had did keep the power alive which
was really useful for leaving my WM5.0 phone attached and charged up.

No power to USB, no power to USB keyboard SLEEP/COMA/WAKE button.

This dawned on me this morning, and I avidly rummaged in my box of bits and
plugged in a PS2 keyboard, did the usuall pressing and holding down of the
chassis power switch to make the computer go from COMA mode into DEAD mode,
powered back up again and eagerly put the computer back into SLEEP/COMA mode
and pressed the WAKE button - nothing. The Sleep button - nothing. The
POWER button (on keyboard) - nothing.

PS2 keyboard returned to box of miscellaneous computer parts.

I have drawn the following conclusion:-

1) The motherboard probably isn't compliant with some standard or other,
despite listing several industry standars in the manual and in the BIOS.

2) Vista doesn't care if the hardware of the computer can or can't recover
from the SLEEP/COMA/HIBERNATE modes and forces the system to suspend itself
in the way Microsoft thinks is acceptable, regardless of whether it is
irrecoverable or not.

The result is, I am guessing that perhaps Microsoft and people like
motherboard/hardware manufacturers could maybe talk to each other a bit and
perhaps they might get the software working with the hardware and vice versa.
Maybe.

The problem I have is this- I can put my computer into sleep mode
once, and take it out of sleep mode fine. If I try to do it again
without turning the computer off and on again, it hangs. ????????

Ah, and I have approximately the same problem, and no solution.
Once in apx 10 times, I can put the computer to 'sleep' and it will not
re-awake to full status. I can use either the "sleep" button on my LOGITECH
LX710 laser keyboard, or I can utilize the "sleep" selection from the START
menu. It doesn't seem to matter which one.
I have also noticed that even if the machine is in "sleep", when it comes
time for the 'auto' responses, i.e. virus check, updates etc., the machine
awakes on its own. I have always been under the impression [notice, not ASS
U ME] that sleep meant just that, stay dormant until "I" bring you awake.
But, then again, we are talking about, and around, highly trained engineers,
who know better than we do what our equipment can do to service 'our' needs!
