Why is this video conversion so much slower in Vista?
Hi,
Each morning I convert the previous days Daily Show to watch at the gym.
The file starts as a .mpg file and i convert it to ipod format using the
free Jodix converter (recomended). When I do this in XP using a Core 2
1.83 with 1GB of Ram the conversion takes 5 minutes. When I use Vista
with a Core Duo 2 2.00 & 2GB of fast memory it takes 17 minutes. Is
this difference to to the Jodix program not being optimized for Vista?
Sounds kind of severe.
thanks

I would call more then 3X the amount time to do the same job severe as well.
It could be the program having issues with Vista or the codec being used. I
would start with talking to Jodix and see what they say or what their other
customers say (forum?).

thanks the problem with free software, sketchy support. I'll try but
the variable that changed here is the OS. While there are many things
that "seem" slower on Vista, this one is quantifiable, so I blame Vista.
thanks

Re: Why is this video conversion so much slower in Vista?

Since you're going from MPEG(2) to MPEG4, nothing on the Vista side should
be really changed as far as that encoding process is concerned - none of the
process you described should be using any aspect of Windows Media or Media
Foundation. They're probably touching the video card driver and doing file
I/O, and that's about it as far as aspects of Windows that they're reliant
upon. (Based upon what you've said - it doesn't appear to be based upon any
real Windows multimedia code aspects, but rather some third party end-to-end
encoding system.)

Jodix is really the great first contact here. =\
