Purchasing Upgrade qualifying products
Do we know what the qualifying products will be to purchase/install the Vista
Upgrade package?

I have XP MCE2005. It's a Dell OEM CD, but it's the full OS (which you pay
$10 more for)...not a recovery disk.

Of course I will be doing a full install, so I won't be validating my
currently installed OS. Will Vista Upgrade validate original CD's? See, the
Dell OEM CD has the software key preloaded, so if the upgrade requires the
original key, I don't know how to extract it from my OEM disc.

Re: Purchasing Upgrade qualifying products
If you choose to purchase the UPGRADE version of Vista, yes you will.
Since it must be installed from a functioning (and authenticated/activated)
previous version desktop.

Ok, but I will be able to do a CLEAN install from here though right?

Seems like an extra LONG step...but at least I don't have to install Vista
over top of XP. Correct?

Re: Purchasing Upgrade qualifying products
Yes, you can choose "Custom" during the setup step and do whatever you
want.

That would be correct--if you don't care about any programs, settings, or
data on your XP partition, you can wipe it during Vista setup.

However, if you ever need to fully re-install Vista (for whatever reason),
you will first have to wipe the partition, install XP, activate it, and
start the upgrade Vista setup from your XP desktop. Again.

You must have missed the other bazillion posts on this topic.

Look through the posts in the newsgroup before asking. This topic has been
covered over and over.

Re: Purchasing Upgrade qualifying products
We have know ever since MS posted the Get Ready website. There is an
upgrade matrix there. You may perform an upgrade in place with Vista Home
Premium or Vista Ultimate editions. The upgrade option will be enabled for
your Vista full edition. Vista does not verify any cd's. That ended with
XP upgrade editions.

You cannot reuse your Dell OEM cd. You might as well save some money and
buy the upgrade edition.

Re: Purchasing Upgrade qualifying products
There is no option to do a clean install. The only options are upgrade and
custom. You may use either.

But presumably an OEM of any description won't activate after a major
hardware change (eg, motherboard/processor/memory upgrade); so is buying
Vista Upgrade if you have XP OEM a waste of money? Seems better economically
to pass the old OEM on with the old hardware and buy Vista OEM with the new
hardware.

Re: Purchasing Upgrade qualifying products
The difference is that you cannot transfer an OEM license to another
computer no matter the hardware. When you have to reactivate on the same
computer you may have to call the activation center and the center may allow
activation.
