Use this utility to unassociated the file type. Then you can associate the
file type as you wish. I had the same issue.

Gee whiz, I thought, finally I've got something that will work.
I downloaded the zip, and ran the exe BUT when I go to the extension
pps, the button "remove file association" is greyed out so I can't do it

This is getting frustrating, have you any idea why it would be greyed
out?

NO idea, you might try uninstalling Office and the Viewer to see if that
allows access. Then Unassociated and Re-Install.
