Windows Explorer Crashes

I just upgraded from XP to Vista Ultimate. Whenever I click on the Computer
icon on the desktop (My Computer), Windows Explorer (Not IE) crashes, stops
working, and has to restart. Any ideas on this issue? Thanks.

If this is the way that Windows Explorer's shell has belaved from the moment
you setup Vista, I'd do a Startup Repair. Startup Repair can fix your
Explorer and it does not require you to be in a no boot Vista situation to
get its benefits:

Note The computer must be configured to start from a CD or from a DVD. For
information about how to configure the computer to start from a CD or from a
DVD, see the information that came with the computer.

2) Restart the computer. To do this, click Start, click the arrow next to
the Lock button, and then click Restart.

This usually means that you enter bios setup by whatever key or keys
(sometimes there is more than one key that will do it for your model--go to
pc manufacturer site) and configure CD to be first in the boot order.

Note If you cannot restart the computer by using this method, use the power
button to turn off the computer. Then, turn the computer back on.

3) Set your language preference, and then click Next.

Note In most cases, the startup repair process starts automatically, and you
do not have the option to select it in the System Recovery Options menu.

4) Click Repair your computer.

5) In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click the operating system
that you want to repair, and then click Next.

6) In the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair to start the
repair process.

7) When the repair process is complete, click Finish.

4) Its been my experience that you can see some causes of the crash from
theWin RE feature:

You'll have a choice there of using:

1) Startup Repair
2) System Restore
3) Complete PC Restore

In addition, you could try using SFC:

Right click command on start menu>run as admin>type at command prompt:

sfc /scannow

Thanks for the help! I tried both of your methods, but neither one fixed the
problem. Vista starts OK and everything runs great -- except that explorer
crashes when I try to view a drive or files on my computer via Computer.

I saw infrequent but troublesome explorer (windows explorer) crashes in
several of the Beta builds, but have not seen it much in the last 3 builds
including RTM.

I wish I had an alternative solution. Make sure that

1) You try to use Startup Repair again from that Recovery link accessed via
the DVD
2) Try system restore from the recovery link as well since sometimes that
will work if there is a restore point to before this happened, but from what
you wrote I suspect it was always happening.

Will you share "exactly" how you performed initial Vista Install, other than
upgrade from XP?

Question, before you first inserted Vista's Install DVD, did you have *all*
devices connected to your machine, including (wishfully) broadband?

If you did not have all devices and Net connection, before Vista Install,
easily that could be the source for the conflict.

If so, the only resolution, reformat... be sure for including (the first
vol) at least a minium 1.5 Gig partition for BitLocker.

Disable all add ons in the Add On manager in IE7.
