RE: Vista-64 5600: Stop Continuous Drive Accessing (by Backup?)
After shutting down services, etc., I discovered that this nearly-constant
access of the external hard drive was being caused by Windows Defender. It
can be excluded from analysis via WD options.

For me, this issue is closed.

Vista-64 5600: Stop Continuous Drive Accessing (by Backup?)
I have a simple Vista setup. Vista (5600) 64-bit on an AMD desktop, with no
partitions or dual boots, etc. I set up Vista's backup to perform an
automatic incremental backup to a connected USB drive once a week (Sundays at
3am). The first backup seemed to run fine. The only info on the USB drive
seems to be the backup. I don't use the USB drive in any other way. I leave
the Vista machine on all of the time.

However, I notice that the USB drive's write-light flashes almost all of the
time. There are times that it is just green, but often it seems active with
red/green flashing. I have no other backup software running. It does not
happen when the Vista computer is off. When I turn the drive off, the Vist
backup status is "unsuccessful."

I double-checked that my PC-cillin virus software is not set to scan the USB
drive. It scans just my C: drive. All scans by PC-cillin and Defender have
been clean.

When I look at the process list in Task Manager, I don't see anything
obvious, but I also don't know the associated process names for Vista's
backup.

Anyone have an idea of what is going on? What could I do to try to
determine the source of this USB drive activity?
