Problem with system restore.
It seems no posible to restore the system from previous "restore points"
with Vista Bussines. I always get the message "System restore did not
complete succesfully. Details: The writer experienced a transient error
(0x800423F3)."

I would much appreciate any help.

To quote MVP Ronnie Vernon....

Here is what I get on that error message:

-----

0x800423F3 vsserror.h

The writer experienced a transient error. If the backup process is
retried, the error may not reoccur.

VSS_E_WRITERERROR_RETRYABLE

This likely indicates that the Volume Shadow Copy service is not
running and possibly disabled or set to Manual.

Open the Control Panel and select Classic View in the Tasks Pane.

Double Click Administrative Tools to open and click the 'Services'
item.

In Services, scroll down to the 'Volume Shadow Copy' service and
double click it to open.

In the Startup Type drop down menu, select the 'Automatic' option.

Click the 'Start' and wait for the indication that it has started.

Go to 'System Protection' and try creating another 'System Restore'
point.

Let us know the results.

Thanks Noel. Unfortunately the problem remains, so we'll need to
try anything else.

ummmm...
'the problem remains' is not very desciptive - what happened at each
step of the process? error messages? did the service start? Was it
already started? - is it still running? what was the error message
when you tried to create a new restore point??
The essence is in the DETAILS!

Sorry, I meant that everything remains exactly the same. Same message:

"System restore did not complete succesfully. The writer experienced a
transient error. If the backup process is
retried, the error may not reoccur. (0x800423F3)."

at the same points, when trying to create a restore point or when trying to
restore the system from a previous one.

Unfortunately there's not a lot of data to be found on what causes
that error - but personally (and I have NO data to back it up!) I
suspect either malware or AV interference. What AV are you using? Have
you checked the system for malware lately?

I use Sophos AV + Zone Alarm firewall and no problem in years. However, I
got a warning some weeks ago about a "potentially malware file", rated "low
danger", something that happens sometimes with no consequences. Maybe I
should try to check the system with other AV to be sure about this point.
Thanks for your help Noel, I'll inform you and the comunity if I found
anything useful.

Just found another potential fix for you to try....
(from http://www.vistaforums.com/Forum/Topic14017-9-1.aspx)
<quote>
Try the following:
1) Start the computer in Safe Mode without networking.
2) Open a command prompt as administrator
3) Type "net stop winmgmt" without quotes and press enter to make
certain the WindowsManagementInstrumentation (WMI) service is not
running.
4) Go to the windows\system32\WBEM\ and rename the Repository folder.
5) Reboot and restart as normal
6) Open a command prompt as administrator.
7) Type "net stop winmgmt" without quotes and press enter to stop the
wmi service.
8) Type winmgmt /resetRepository and restart the system.

See if this works.
