Windows Update fails to install updates

When I try to install updates with Windows Update, I get a message that it's
failed and an error code 80070002 (unknown error). I have deleted files in
the Windows downloads folders as suggested but this didn't help. Any ideas?

Thanks for these suggestions - unfortunately they don't work. The first
suggestion deletes the log of files downloaded so I lose the records. Even
before that, at no time did the log show which updates had failed, only the
last successful one. If I check for updates now, the system shows I have
updates ready to install but when I hit the install button, Vista asks for
permission to continue and then I get the error message "Some updates were
not installed.... as above. Thanks again - any more suggestions welcome.

After repeating this procedure, find the file WindowsUpdate.log (usually in
c:\windows) and post the last hundred or so lines here.

I have fought with this for 2 weeks. Create a new account with admin
authority, log on as this account, run microsoft updates and hopefully
it will work. Log off and go back to the account that wouldn't update
and run again. Worked for me, I hope it helps.

From another forum

I just had the same symptoms: Starting from a distinct point in time
the windows updates didn't work anymore and everytime returned the error
code 80070002.
After a few hours I found the solution: sfc /scannow reported the file
wuauclt.exe.
And the reason was: McAfee virusscan has put this file into
quarantaine. It falsely found W32/Generic.worm.aa in there.
Restoring this file from the McAfee GUI completely solved this problem.

reinstalling the Windows Update Agent. There's a link in KB949104 to the
