Downloading and extracting zip files
I'm having a problem downloading and extracting zip files. When trying to
download them it will open and download the file pretty fast but sticks when
it gets to 99% and stay there for about 5 mins, although i did have one file
that took me over 20 mins. When trying to extract the zip, a 4.28MB file,
it's giving me an estimated time of 19 hours and 56 mins. A smaller file
that was only 105mb to extract took about 45 mins. This is driving me nuts
and I have not had a problem with any other downloads or files, only zip
files. I have a cable connection and have updated my computer and scanned
for any spyware or viruses, but my computer is only about 2 weeks old. Is
this a common problem or something that maybe someone else has had and knows
of a fix for?

Re: Downloading and extracting zip files
No there's not. I've checked and re-checked the internet and it's settings
and even the firewall and security for it.
I've never come across this sort of problem before, i've tried just about
everything i can think of... extracting seems to the worst, i can live with
the 5 mins downloads, but the almost 20 hours to extract one zip file under
5MB's is just crazy.

Re: Downloading and extracting zip files
are you opening the zip file from the internet or downloading and then
opening? and are you using winzip, winrar or built in?

Re: Downloading and extracting zip files
I've tried both, opening from the internet and also downloading it onto my
desktop and opening it that way with the same results. I'm using the built
in that came with Vista, but i've downloaded and tried winzip and that
program just completly froze up on me, so i un-installed it.
I'm trying to un-zip one file now that is giving me an estimated time of 2
hours and 58 mins, and it's taken about 40 mins already to give me that
estimated time.
Items remaining: 50 (307 KB) and the speed is at 0 bytes/sec, if that gives
a little bit better idea of what's going on.

Re: Downloading and extracting zip files
give winrar a go. install with compatibility with win xp if it doesnt work
first time. you can always try a restart after you install.

does this happen with just the one zip file or all? maybe try downloading
from a mirror.

Re: Downloading and extracting zip files
I downloaded winrar and I got the same results, it completly froze up on me
and wouldn't un-zip any file. It is slow and sometimes freezes with every
zip file that i try to download and extract, from the smallest at about 212kb
to a file that's 4.56MB. I tried extracting a 4MB file when i went to bed
and it wasn't done when i woke up, gave me an estimated time of 4 hours and
24 mins when i woke up. I've tried a system restore and no luck... i think
i'm going to be sending back my computer and praying this doesn't happen to
the next one, lol.
