Repair corrupted system files
I'm new here, but I did try to find answers posted to others before posting here.

I figured out how to run a sfc /scannow from the command prompt which showed corrupted system files which it could not repair. It created a CBS log file which I also managed to open. After that, I am totally at sea. I do not understand anything in the log file. How do I effect repairs? Do I do a repair install? If I do, will it disengage the programs that I have installed as XP does?

Thanks for any enlightenment

A repair install of winxp does not impact on installed applications

Thanks for your reply, DL.

In my experience, when I ran repair from the cd of XP, it detached the
installed programs and I would have to reinstall them all. We have 5
computers running XP SP3 for a number of years now, and it has happened
every time we did a repair install. This was always done from the CD, and
the second "repair" option. Perhaps if we had done the repair install from
the first offered "repair" on the CD it would have been different.

Thank you for your reply. Good point! I did not insert the Vista CD before
running the SFC. I will do that this morning and let you know if it was a
success.

Update.

I put the CD in the drive before running SFC /scannow. It did not make any
difference. It still says it found corrupt files and could not fix some of
them. :-(

I am still missing something.

Probably you`ve got the standard vista DVD,
and you`ve got SP1 on your machine.

SP1 has updated some of your files from the original
installation.

Re: Repair corrupted system files
Hi Meerkat:

I think you may have hit the nail on the head. I am running Vista SP1 on
this machine. Since it seems to be running fine as it is, I will not spend
any more energy on this situation unless there is a way to correct all the
the corrupted files in SP1. It may have been a good thing that it did not
correct.

Thank you
