Hibernate can not be used anymore
Hi,
I have installed Vista Business on my Dell Inspiron 9400 Laptop.
At first, Hibernate works fine, but since a few Days, I got a Message like
"Hibernate is not active, should it be activated?" (Is a German Vista
version, so I don't know how this Messagebox looks like in the English
version).
When selecting the activation button, I got a new Messagebox "Activation has
failed" without any information on the reason for this error.
There is also no information in the Log-Files nor in the Control Panel.

Do you have the hibernation file on your HD. One possibility is that you
have increased the data and or programs to the point that you can't fit the
hiberfil.sys on your drive. Especially true if you have large amounts of
memory.

Did you delete the hibernation file using Disk Cleanup?

Type this in the search box, click it
or just run it in an elevated CMD prompt.

powercfg -H ON

Re: Hibernate can not be used anymore
Hi Michael,

Thanks for your help. This reactivates the Hibernation mode again.
I did not recognized, that disk cleanup removes files that are still needed
for a working system :-(

Re: Hibernate can not be used anymore
Thanks for your help,

I guess, I removed this file by using "disk cleanup" feature on drive
settings.

Re: Hibernate can not be used anymore
You're welcome. Just be sure to uncheck hibernation when
you run Disk Cleanup. I don't remember if it's checked by
default when you first run cleanup. But, I'm sure once you
uncheck it, it stays unchecked. Just keep an eye on it.

I use CrapCleaner for my cleanup needs, it's much better
and will delete most temp files, not just the files in the default
temp folder. Many people have no idea how many temp files
are actually created and never deleted, spread all over the place.
The first time I run CrapCleaner on a friend's or family member's
computer, 100's of MB are usually deleted. You just have to make
sure you don't run CrapCleaner if you need to reboot after installing
something- that program may need some files in the temp folder it
created, but can't replace certain files until the next reboot because
they are in use. CrapCleaner's default setting in Advanced options,
has it set to only delete temp files more than 48 hours old.

It's free. Just watch during the setup to uncheck the Yahoo toolbar
if you don't want it.

Take care,

Michael

Re: Hibernate can not be used anymore
The option to remove the hibernation file in Disk cleanup isn't enabled by
default - at least it isn't on my machine. If this is the case you obviously
inadvertantly enabled the option to remove the hiberfil in the first place.
While disk cleanup is a good application it is necessary to check the
enabled options to see if they are represent the files you wish to clear
from your pc.
