Opening a web page via desktop shortcut also opens a blank web pag

When I create a desktop shortcut to a web site and double click it, I.E.
opens the web site but it also opens a blank web page. When I switch to the
blank web page there is no URL in the address window and the tab indicates
connecting...
I would appreciate it if anyone could offer a solution.
P.S. - If I open I.E. then enter a URL in the address window the blank web
page does not appear.

IE version is ????

Thank you for replying. The I.E. version is 7.0 which I have been using for
quite a while. After posting I read a previous post dated 11/21 dealing with
the same problem. Although I.E. Add-Ons were not my problem, I decided to
checked my Startup list and isolated my problem to a Start-Up program (Auto
Sizer) which I had recently upgraded. I removed it from Startup and I.E.
works fine.
