Sorry, but you're getting all hot and bothered over nothing. Ubuntu
security reports include the 15,000 applications that are bundled with the
OS. Between open source code, 15,000 applications, the security paranoia
of the Linux camp, and the submission of a security patch being a feather
in a security professional's cap, you're going to get a high percentage of
reported vulnerabilities that are only hypothetical and not even close to
being exploited. Whereas, with closed-source Windows, Microsoft
is the only one who can examine the source. Also they penalize security
researchers who make their findings public, so Windows vulnerabilities
tend not to be made public (let alone fixed) until well after large-scale
attacks have already appeared.
And while we're on the subject... unlike Windows, consumer-friendly
distro's such as Ubuntu manage the applications base, too. So not only OS
vulnerabilities, but also vulnerabilities in all of the user's
applications are fixed via the same central update system.
