protected mode off
I hit the [protected mode off] at the bottom of the browser.
This brought up Internet security properties.
the
1st link - Internet - medium high, protected mode check marked
2nd link - local intranet - medium low, protected mode check marked
3rd link - trusted - medium, protected mode check marked OFF, it can't hold the check mark
4th link - restricted - high, protected mode check marked
and nothing seems to change the protected mode display in the status bar.

What am I missing ? How do I turn the protected mode on ?
If it means turn on the Vista firewall, disregard. I prefer Trends firewall.
There's something else, I called it annoy ware. It popped up for just about every key stroke asking me 'are you sure ?. No I'm sitting here drunkenly swatting keys on the keyboard. I turned that off, but can't recall what it was called.
And won't be turning that back on either.
