Pre-installed with no uninstall options.
Microsoft Works. I don't need it but can't get rid of it. No uninstall option
in Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features (no right-click context menu,
at all) nor an uninstall link in Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Works.

Any ideas?

Hello,
What do you mean " ---in Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features (
no right click context menu at all ) " ? See my screenshot link below :

Thank you for responding. In my case there are no options for Works, either
above the listview (as shown in your example) or in its context-menu. As a
matter of fact, Works has no context menu at all.

Just a wild guess, or 2 :
You have SP1 ?
You don't have Works in your machine ?

If it came preinstalled and you haven't used it, it probably isn't really
installed. The icon in the All Programs menu (Start) is probably just a
link to the installer. This is a guess because you didn't give much
information, but that's the way a lot of OEM preinstalled software works.
The OEM gives you a shortcut to the installer and if you want the
particular software (like AOL for instance), you install it.

You don't say where you are seeing Works but if it is a shortcut as
described above, right-click on it and then left-click on Properties to see
the target. Navigate to there and see what you will see.

RE: Pre-installed with no uninstall options.
Thank you for responding.

MS Works came pre-installed, fully opperational. There just does not seem to
be a way to uninstall it. Not through the [Control Panel\Programs\Programs
and Features] interface, nor its [Start Menu\Programs] or [Program Files]
folders.

As for the system, I'm on Vista Premium, without SP1. Removed the pack when
it caused instability.

Check in the Works newsgroup where you'll get answers from Works experts. It
is: microsoft.public.works.win

I'm sorry I was unable to help you.

Sorry friend. I can't help either. I have Vista Home Premium, just
like yours.

I've never worked with an OEM distribution of Vista so I'm doing a bit of
guessing...but if you are comfortable with working in the Registry a bit of
poking might help. Using REGEDIT:

* Select the Registry key (keys are in the left-hand pane of REGEDIT):

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uni nstall

* Scan through the data items (in the right-hand pane) of each of the
subkeys under UNINSTALL (including ones where the key is only a GUID, not a
program name) to find one that represents Works. I don't know what it will
look like; I've not touched Works in a decade.

* If you find an entry that represents Works, look at the data items to see
if there is one named NoRemove, of type REG_DWORD, and value 1; if you find
it, that's why there's no remove button. Change its value to 0, then open
the PROGRAMS AND FEATURES control panel: the UNINSTALL button should be
visible.

#include <usual Dire Warnings about the dangers of editing the Registry.h>

Since you have no idea why your computer's manufacturer chose to prevent
Works from being removed, you don't really know what will result from
uninstalling it. It's also possible that something in your system - perhaps
the Registry itself - is corrupt, and attempting to remove Works may result
in various unpleasant examples of collateral damage. PLEASE make sure that
any irreplaceable data is backed up before you try this.

Good luck!

Joe Morris
