Vista Start Menu Has Strange Items
I have Vista Home Premium running and am puzzled by the start menu behavior.
In general, I like the new menu, especially the search routine. And I like
that the most recently used applications show in the start menu.

However, a number of unused applications also show in the menu and these
seem to push the truly used applications off, leaving me to dig around for
them.

The ones I don't use, but show up anyway are Welcome Center, Windows
Calendar, Windows Meeting Space, Gateway Game Console, and others. These
items are not pinned. Don't see any settings mentioning this.

And I don't want to see them on the front of the start menu unless I've
recently used them. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

I've only been using Vista for about two months now, but the first
thing I did with the Start menu was to arrange it the same as I had
with XP.

I configured it to show ZERO recently used programs.

I deleted right-click, Remove from the list) everything from the list
that I didn't want frequent access to.

I went through my All Programs listing and sent my most frequently
used programs to my Quick Launch, the rest I pinned to the Start menu.

Oh yeah... and I turned off the annoying highlighting of recently
installed programs too.

I can right click and remove the items shown. However, they come back over
time. I like having the recent applications showing, just don't want bs
showing.

I have never figured out the logic behind that feature. How it decides
which programs to list, I have no idea. It's like you have to use the
program 3 times or something before it gets put there.

It should be more like the recently opened files in every other program on
the planet, which shows the programs you last used in chron order.

It's even wierder than that--if you >>don't<< use it, it shows up in the
menu!! Right now on the menu I have Windows Calendar and Windows Meeting
Space that I've never used or even opened.

Is there a way to tell Vista which programs to NOT display in the
recent programs area (as with TweakUI under WinXP).

Re: Vista Start Menu Has Strange Items

Hi Matt,

Sorry, but no. It will show whatever recent program you open if it is
turned on. The only thing you can do is reset Recent Programs to clear
it, or turn it off.

Sorry,
Shawn

Thanks for the reply. I'll continue to use right-click "Remove from
this list". Have you heard anything about possible "Powertoys" for
Vista? Matt
