MVP's, text to speech!!, Can I dictate in other text input program
Please can a MVP help me, I have just got the new Windows Vista, complete
with the speech recognition program. I should explain that I am disabled and
cannot use my hands. I am so pleased at the progress made on speech
recognition.

However, I have found that dictation or text to speech, works really well in
wordpad and notepad, but I can't seem to get it to work with other text input
programmes such as Windows word, Windows works word processor or other non
Windows Programmes such as Google Earth. When I try to dictate in these
programmes, all speech recognition can do is bring up commands, and my use of
dictation or text to speech is no more.

I am sure that it is a configuration problem and an easy solution for you
experts out there, I sure would like an answer to this, it would be much
appreciated if any MVP's could help me??. For a person like me, it would be
like a dream come true.

Thanking you in advance

Re: MVP's, text to speech!!, Can I dictate in other text input pro
Thanks for the reply Mark,

I have the new Windows Vista Home Premium and I don't seem to have MS word,
instead I have MS "Works word processor" which seems to have taken it's
place. I went to this, clicked on the " tools menu" like you said, but there
was no "speech" on this menu. As I said, Dictation works Great on wordpad and
notepad, but not on Windows works word processor. It seems like MS has
Favoured "Wordpad" for dictating but Wordpad has'nt Got things like "spell
check" ," grammar and punctuation" or "Thesaurus" . there must be a way to
do this, have you any other ideas??

Re: MVP's, text to speech!!, Can I dictate in other text input pro
Works word processor does not function with Vista Speech Recognition text
input. There are a number of other products that can handle it.
Trace R&D Center
The Trace R&D Center at the University of Wisconsin&—Madison publishes a
database of more than 18,000 products and other information for people with
disabilities. The database is available on their Web site. The Trace R&D
Center also publishes Trace Resource Book, which provides descriptions and
photographs of about 2,000 products. To obtain these materials, contact:
Trace R&D Center, University of Wisconsin—Madison, 5901 Research Park
Boulevard, Madison, WI 53719-1252.

Another work around might be to paste the wordpad text into Works after
dictation.

Re: MVP's, text to speech!!, Can I dictate in other text input pro
Thanks Mark,

I will try the website, I must point out though, I am from the UK but I
assume That they will have outlets here as well ? I will try the pasting
method, If that works, does that mean that I will have full function of works
word processing functions such as the spelling check and punctuation etc?
Also I now have another problem, All of a sudden, my dictation does not
dictate straight to the page, instead it brings up an "Alternate's page"
Where you select the text you want . Can you tell me how to change this? I
think I might have Done something that I shouldn't have, I can explain what I
have done in another post Because it is taking ages doing it this way. in the
meantime, can you help me with these questions? Thank you.

There is no real alternative for training the recognition engine to
recognize your speech. The pick page is how you do that.

Re: MVP's, text to speech!!, Can I dictate in other text input pro
Hello again, it seems to have gone, my dictation has returned in this post,
what I was going to say was: I was trying to find a default in which " speech
recognition program" would work with windows works word processor, but I
accidentally clicked on something I should not have. So I went to restore
and went back a few days to an earlier restore point. I restarted my
computer, and a red Circle with a white cross appeared and the words " your
system was not restored". So I went back to an earlier time, and it came
back the same, how do I get rid of the red circle and rectify the problem?

I cannot remember if I asked you this in the last post, but how do you paste
from wordpad to windows works word processor? Apologies if i did,

Thanks again Mark

Re: MVP's, text to speech!!, Can I dictate in other text input pro
It's me again, what is the "pick page"? Are you telling me that I need to
train with voice recognition on other programmes first? I have got MS office
PowerPoint Viewer 2007, will dictation work in this? I guess I'll have to try
it.

If I downloaded MS Word, would dictation work in this? sorry for all the
questions, but I am new at this. thanks again.

Re: MVP's, text to speech!!, Can I dictate in other text input pro
I just wanted to say thanks again Mark, cutting and pasting dictation from
wordpad to windows works word processor Worked, still don't understand why
they could not of put text to speech in their main word program in Vista, I
suppose it is a way for MS to make us spend more money on buying word
programmes.

and I will check out the website, still haven't done that yet.
