Vista Activation Lost After Every Restart
Hi there everyone,

I have a volume license via my employer and have installed Vista x64 on this
my primary system as well as on my x86 system. The x86 system works
perfectly with it and never requires reactivation yet on my x64 system I have
to reactivate Vista after every restart.

Now while this is a little frustrating it hasn't really caused any issues up
until today. Normally the reactivation takes about 10 seconds and I am good
to go but when I attempted to reactivate today I received the following
message:

"The product key you typed is already in use. To activate Windows you
will need another Windows Vista Ultimate product key."

It then goes on to provide me with options to purchase another key or enter
another if I already have one. I can also use the automated phone system to
activate or contact Microsoft, which brings me to a help screen that has here
as one of the options.

I am wondering if the reason why this is requiring a reactivation every time
might have to do with my dual core processor. Other than that, I am unsure
what could be causing it. Either way, I don't want to have to reformat again
as installing Vista this time was much more of a pain in the rear than RC1 or
RC2 were.

Thanks,

Aspenglade.

Re: Vista Activation Lost After Every Restart
Hi,

Try this: Choose the option to enter another key, then reenter your volume
license key. Click 'next' (not activate), and it should reactivate for you.
If it does not, you need to have your company contact their source of the
volume license key for resolution.

Re: Vista Activation Lost After Every Restart
Hi Rick,

Unfortunately this did not work....while I would love to get in touch with
our licensing group, the company I work for issues MSDN access to all
employees and they won't be able to resolve this. Every employee gets
individual access and each person's account is given a 10 license key via
msdn for any MS products. Probably will have to call MS and have them
reissue another key for me....hmm.

More importantly is the question of why it requires a reactivation after
every restart....

Your company must abide by the MSDN licensing terms and conditions.
They cannot arbitrarily give every employee MSDN access without purchasing
the correct MSDN subscription coverage.

While I am sure that the company does have the correct coverage being that
they are a major fortune 500 computer company, that is not the point of this
topic. Please either address the issue at hand or move on, thank you

Re: Vista Activation Lost After Every Restart
Hmm, maybe not fortune 500, I have no idea what their status in that regard
is to be honest. I do however know that they are in the top 3 for worldwide
computer manufacturers.....where in that top 3? Not gonna disclose that

RE: Vista Activation Lost After Every Restart
Hello Aspenglade,
This is not a volume license product that you are using.
Windows Ultimate is not a available as volume license.
So that is a MSDN key that you are using.
What show in the application event logs for software-licensing-SLC?
That should show us if we are seeing different hardware each boot ( like
the dual-processor issue you reference)
It should give us an indication as why you may be having this issue.

Check the permissions on the WPA.dbl and wpa.bak files in the
\windows\system32 folder

Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Hi there Darrell,

I've gone into the event logs and it reports two things clearly hundreds, if
not thousands of times, over the time since I have installed Vista. The
first is indeed that it is finding a hardware change on restart and it
reports the following:

</Event>

Looking in the event details for the actual failure I also show: PA Maximum
unlock exceeded.

Thanks,

RE: Vista Activation Lost After Every Restart
Oh, I also forgot to add that my windows\system32 folder does not have either
the WPA.dbl file or the WPA.bak file. I've done a full system search
scanning for all hidden and protected files and neither of these came up at
all. Then again....my 32 version of Vista Ultimate doesn't have them either
and has no issues.

Re: Vista Activation Lost After Every Restart
I am having the same problem with my Vista install from my MSDN
subscription. I do not have the two files in question either and have
numerous event log entries for Microsoft-Windows-Security-Licensing-SLC. I
am running a AMD Athlon X2 and have not added ANY hardware since I re-imaged
the computer.
