Vista Basic Home
Well just went to the Microsoft site to see the differences and found that
windows aero or whatever its called wont be available in that package. From
what I have seen I reckon if you have XP it will be a complete waste of
money to go to Vista Basic Home Edition. Now I would assume that this has
been discussed previously in this group but I only read a handful of posts.

I most probably will go to the next version up or stay with XP and it will
depend on the Australian price. I guess a malicious streak in me hopes the
hackers really get stuck into Vista and costs MS heaps of money :-)

Re: Vista Basic Home/Aero can be forced to work in VBH
You can force Aero into VBH.

Ensure that you have the following registry value set to :

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\Composition set to 1 (32-bit DWORD)

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\CompositionPol icy set to 2 (32-bit
DWORD)

2/ Restart DWM by opening a command prompt with administrative privileges :

- Type 'net stop uxsms'
- Then 'net start uxsms'

I tried what you suggested and it did work. I got Aero in Home Basic,
but not Aero Glass.

RDP?

It's "limited" in Vista Home and VHBasic.

"I reckon if you have XP it will be a complete waste of money to go to Vista
Basic Home Edition."
Possibly, but if so, it is because $ were spent on the upgrade without doing
a little research in advance.

As with any operating system upgrade, it should only be done when the owner
has determined there will be appropriate benefit.
Upgrading simply because a new operating system is available has never been
a good reason.

Windows XP will probably be supported for at least the next several years.
Most will probably upgrade when getting Vista with a new computer.

Re: Vista Basic Home
Mainstream support for XP Pro is scheduled to end two years after the date
of general public availability of Vista (Jan 30, 2009) and extended support
will end five years after the end of mainstream support (Jan 30 of 2014).

See: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3223

Mainstream support for XP Home is scheduled to end on Jan 30, 2009 the same
as XP Pro, but extended support for consumer products is only three years,
so extended support for Home may end as early as Jan 30, 2012. The table
for Home only lists the end of mainstream support.

Re: Vista Basic Home
I expect those dates to change.
Partly because I expect SP-3 and also so many will be using Windows XP and
will demand an extension if Microsoft tries to stop support that soon.
But we shall have to wait and see.
