"Pin" CD Drive shortcut to Start Menu?
After many, many hours, my Vista machine is almost configured as efficiently
as my XP machine. Just a few items left, and of course I have to wait for a
PowerToys release for Vista...

But in the meantime, I'm trying to figure out how to add a shortcut to my
CD/DVD drive (D to the "pinned" section of my Start menu. I can't drag a
shortcut there, it just tries to open the shortcut in whatever app I'm
holding it over.

I can't seem to find the "pinned" list in Explorer either.

Does anyone know how to do this in Vista?

More importantly, does anyone know why it is so much more complicated to do
in Vista, when it was so easy to do (and useful) in XP, 98 and 95?

Re: "Pin" CD Drive shortcut to Start Menu?
It's not possible to Pin CD drives and network drives to the Start Menu. This is the case in Windows XP as well.

A roundabout route is to create a shortcut to a fixed drive letter and Pin it to the Start Menu. Then change the Target Drive/path in the Properties of the Pinned item, and change its display name too. That shortcut needs to be present in order for the newly Pinned item to work.

Re: "Pin" CD Drive shortcut to Start Menu?
Thanks for the information, I'll definately give it a try when I have some
time.

I have to say, though, I had no trouble at all doing this in XP. I just
opened "My Computer" and right-click-dragged the CD/DVD drive onto the start
menu. Same with my C: drive.
