Upgrading Vista Home Premium to SP1
Hi! 17 May

I suddenly notice a lot of references to SP1 for Vista. I have stopped
updates on my Vista Home Premium, after it killed my WinMail. I uninstalled
upto KB 933928, and disabled updates. It is working fine, but I found AVG
offering me AVG 8.0, which refused to install saying my Vista is not updated
( after downloading 80MB twice !! !&*()^%$$).
How do I get to SP1?
Just install all updates from MS?
Will my WinMail survive? Or will I be forced to shift to XP Outlook?

There is a lot of flak meant for Vista, but my system is very stable ( touch
wood and everything else)
Request MVP advice.

Thanks

Re: Upgrading Vista Home Premium to SP1
You can download the stand alone installation of Vista SP1 and install it
manually. It is an executable. Doing the SP1 upgrade via Windows Update will
require a much smaller download, usually, depending on how up-to-date your
system currently is.

Re: Upgrading Vista Home Premium to SP1
The most obvious way of getting SP1 is to re-enable Windows Updates.
Alternatively, you can download the standalone version (see this link from
my website: http://vistasupport.mvps.org/downloa...opy_of_SP1.htm ) I
suggest you read the 'learn how to install' information to prior to
installing.

As for WinMail I don't use it so can't really say what caused your original
problem.

Re: Upgrading Vista Home Premium to SP1
I enabled and executed all the available updates.
Started WinMail and got the feared error 'Cannot Select Recipients' while
selecting recipients in a new mail by clicking on the icon next to 'To'
Knowing that KB933928 was the source of this error, I uninstalled KB933928.
The error did not repeat.
Then I accepted the offer of AVG to upgrade my AVG 7.5 to AVG 8. AVG
complained that I did not have KB929547. I downloaded and installed that one
too. AVG 8.0 got installed.

Sorry to appear a bit dull, but does this mean I have SP1 installed? In XP,
the SP is displayed in My Computer properties; but there is no such
information on my Vist Home Premium.

Thanks

Re: Upgrading Vista Home Premium to SP1
Go to the Start menu and type 'winver' (without the quotes) in the search
box. When winver appears at the top of the search list press Enter to launch
winver. If you have SP1 installed you should see the following in the winver
box: Version 6.0 (Build 6001: Service Pack 1)

If this information is not seen then SP1 is not installed. Even though you
uninstalled KB933928 it isn't saying that SP1 will re-install it.

You might also check Google to see if there are any WinMail newsgroups -
someone else may be having the same problem with KB933928 and may be able to
point you in the right direction for a suitable remedy.

Unable to choose recipients in WINMAIL I
notice you have posted here, but it appears that McAfee or Norton product
could be the cause of the problem. If you haven't returned to the Vistahead
newsgroup recently you might like to read through the replies to see if this
helps. Alternatively have you tried Windows Live Mail?

Re: Upgrading Vista Home Premium to SP1
I have been yelled at for top-posting: so I reply here to the WINVER advice;
i ran winver: it reports Vista 6.000.
I went to Windows Update for SP1, and it told me I should be an administrator.
I am.
Re WinMail: I started the thread on two or three places: no one has any
answer, except Gary Vandermoulen, who advises throw WinMail out the Windows.
I do not have Norton or McAfee. I have AVG.
I have now installed all Updates available, except one KB937287.
It appears SP1 is not via the regular Windows Updates, but is a separate
install?
Winmail is now OK: i uninstalled KB933928 again. ( and again..... : I am
planning to move to Outlook XP (which is installed:-) ) but Vista can make
one very nervous)

Thanks everyone

Mohan

Re: Upgrading Vista Home Premium to SP1
Oh. I just looked at the Microsoft page: and it says SP1 happens
automatically, but it may take a month to happen. (??)

Re: Upgrading Vista Home Premium to SP1
If you are yelled at for top posting then ignore them. I'm sorry but I top
post and regardless of who yells at me I will continue to top post! I want
to see a reply instantly, not keep scrolling down through dozens of
paragraphs.

From the winver information, you obviously haven't got SP1 installed.

SP1 will download automatically, however, I'm not sure about the period
being a month - a couple of days maybe but not a month. I'm not sure whether
MS have actually corrected the download of SP1 but if you had certain
drivers (that needed updating) on your machine then Windows Update would not
offer SP1 (take a look at this knowledgebase article
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343 ) If your PC doesn't have any of
the mentioned drivers to update and you still haven't had SP1 automatically
download then, as I said in my first post, you can download the standalone
version. This is rather a large download, around 465MB. Just make sure you
download the correct version (usually the 32 Bit)

As I have said I don't use Windows Mail other than for newsgroups. For email
I use Outlook 2007 which works reasonably well for me. The only fault I a
Lycos account I have which Outlook can only access occasionally, but that is
a fault of the Lycos server not Outlook.

Hi!!! 18 May

Thanks a lot! The MS link is very clear: I have yet to install one more
update, and then maybe SP1 will happen.
