You answered your own question. There's no market share sales figures
for software you can get for free.

On can not help but be astounded by those who would mock and disparage
those who are working hard to produce good Linux software and give it
away for FREE.

Yet Mac Market share is still stuck at about 3% no matter how many more
sales Apple makes. That's because their sales increase is due to an
increase of the size of the market in general.

Correction: *accurate* market share sales.
marketshare.hitslink.com does have some figures (Linux
comes in at the ridiculously low 0.63%) but their
measurement method is slightly suspect, especially
since their homepage has an interesting correction
for April:

To their credit, they identified and removed the offending
data on May 7th.

doesn't break out Linux kernel versions, damaging their credibility
(though in all fairness Linux kernel versions aren't easy to get

There's also that "Other" (1.91%). How much of that "Other" is
truly Windows, and how much is Linux masquerading as Windows?
Konqueror in particular can mimick IE as far as external
websites are concerned.
