Impossible to kill app
In XP killing an app usually meant just using Task Manager. Sometimes
Sysinternals pskill. But it nearly always worked.
Now I have a situation where a normal app (Shareaza) hangs, and is not
killable. Taskman tries to kill it, but after issuing the command nothing
happens. Pskill just hangs in the attempt.
When the app hangs, Vista refuses to restart or shutdown. I have to use the
hardware reset.
Are there some other tools I can use for killing of this app?
Are the (former) Sysinternals apps usable on Vista at all?
Other suggestions?

Try another application? There are many about it seems. Perhaps its just
not compatible with Vista yet.

But shouldn't it be possible to kill processes in Vista at least as well as
in XP? What if it were a virus or spyware?

Re: Impossible to kill app
If you can't end the process, end the process tree. You may have to reboot
after doing so. Then, replace the faulting application with one that works
with Vista.

It should be possible but if a program is incompatible, the
crash/freeze/whatever may go deeper and be impossible to kill. I have had
it with a couple of programs.
Of course being Shareaza by the very nature of file sharing it is, you may
have picked up a virus or spyware that is causing the problem.

I don't download software through Shareaza. I sometimes download PDF-files,
and I know they can be a safety problem. Considering all the risks that are
associated with P2P downloading, I have protected myself in every way
possible short of uninstalling or going offline. I would be very surprised
if there are viruses or spyware on my computer. No such thing as 100% sure
in this world, though.
This particular P2P-program was not the point, though. My point was that it
was impossible to kill on Vista. When it reaches this state of "not possible
to kill", any file operation on the entire partition hangs Explorer and
other apps. Its like the partition is locked. I done a diskcheck with no
errors.

I wasn't judging you on what what download, just saying that P2P programs
*can* be a hive for virus/spyware etc. But I am sure you already know that
:-)
I really think that its a case of Shareaza not being Vista compatible. Have
you considered trying Bit Torrent for your file needs? Bit torrent program
in itself is a bit strange, but uTorrent is friendly.
