Update or Instal Vista fails "Windows could not update registry da
I have been trying to upgrade XP Professional to Vista on a Dell Inspiron
5150, bu the installation eventually fails after installing all the files
with an error "Windows could not update registry data in the installation".

The "Upgrade Adviser" found an issue with older driver for wireless network
card, but I installed newer version, and that is now fine.

I have also tried a 'clean' install, rather than an upgrade, and get the
same error - which would suggest it is a hardware/disk/file problem rather
than some existing drivers/apps on the machine.

The ISO DVD is fine and I have verified the Sha checksum.

Any ideas anyone?

cheers.

Sue

It might be a security program blocking the Registry changes it needs to
make. A few of the programs now doing this are:
Ad-aware's Ad-Watch
McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware
Norton AV
Spyware Blaster
Spybot> Tools> IE Tweaks
Spybot- Teatimer
Spysweeper
Zone Alarm (free) 6.5 Reported to be fixed in later versions.

In the case of Zone Alarm 6.5 and Norton 2007 it actually has to be
uninstalled. Make sure the Windows Firewall is turned on until you
reinstall Zone Alarm.

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking with Networking and try the upgrade.

Re: Update or Instal Vista fails "Windows could not update registr
Thanks for the suggestions.

I did have Norton Systemworks installed, but I had uninstalled it before I
tried the upgrade. I have been through and removed most things that could
even possibly cause problems...almost nothing left!

I have tried going into Safe mode, but the Vista Upgrade is disabled and
says it cannot be run from Safe mode.

So I am having to try a clean install from Safe mode instead.

We'll see.

RE: Update or Instal Vista fails "Windows could not update registry da
Nope. Same problem.

Clean install from Safe mode, although a *lot* quicker, still comes up with:

"Windows could not update the registry data in the installation".

I don't understand this, since a clean install should be able to write to
its own registry!

Any other ideas???

thx.

Is there a BIOS update available for your motherboard?

To do a clean install boot from the DVD.

Re: Update or Instal Vista fails "Windows could not update registr
Well, finally installed, but had to completely wipe the disk and install from
bootable DVD.

Seems that just having XP on the disk caused it to fail, even why it was
supposed to be doing a clean install.
