sp1 disabled my local network and internet connection
I installed sp1 last night and this morning my internet was gone, the
network controller on my machine couldn't find any connections, though
the control panel insists the device and the driver are working
correctly. I just uninstalled sp1 and got back my connection.

I'd done the install hoping it would fix a problem that just started
happening: Vista no longer recognizes software CD. Up until a few
weeks ago, if I inserted a CD containing software (e.g. adobe CS2),
the autoplay brought up the start menu. It not only no longer brings
up the start menu, but when I click on the cd/dvd drive in explorer,
it asks me how I want to format it. Nero's info tool reads and
determines that the disc contains the software I want to install, but
vista can't get to it.

The only plus side of sp1 was that it correctly reports how much RAM I
have installed, instead of 2.93 as it did prior to sp1.

Any idea how to install software now that Vista no longer recognizes
software media?

Enter the device manager and remove any/all entries under network
adpapter and reboot.

No, that didn't work. I had to rollback to the restore point prior to
the install of sp1. The icon for my network still has a red X through
it, but apparently I can connect now.

NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller, driver date 3/6/2007, version
65.6.5.0 signed by microsoft

The red x is probably due to a new device that showed up that wasn't
there before: WAN Miniport (SSTP) It shows as not working in the
device list.

I've had periodic messages (once a month or less) saying there is
something wrong with this driver, but there does not appear to be any
update available for it, either at Microsoft or at NVIDIA. The
physical device is built into the motherboard,.

I sure hope SP1 doesn't automatically download as part of the updates
until they fix this issue.

That's the *worst* thing about SP1, as far as I'm concerned. What it
now reports is extremely misleading. Nothing has changed except the
report. The amount you can use (2.93GB, in your case) remains the
same.

Re: sp1 disabled my local network and internet connection
This is what <someothernickname> shared with us today ...

SNIP...

Sorry that didn't work for you...It did for me.
From all the blogs and NG's I've read....SP1 will NOT install if it
finds conflicts. That seems precarious at this point.
However, There will be a NEW SP1 avail middle of this month.
It is referred to as Wave2. The first wave is restricted by language
packs as well as awareness of driver versions.

In time they will have a version that works for everybody.
The good news is that with each realease, it will be more intelligent
in terms of compatibility.

Also, it will contain more fixes and updates as the hotfixes become
more obvious.

I'm not that convinced that SP1 is worth really worrying about.

I think that SP2 will be the REAL fix we are all waiting for.

Respectfully,
