Mr. Dyer,

I didn't realize I was rambling. I try to provide all the pertinent
information in my first post so that there is no need to ask for more
information. Must be a bad habit of mine. My wife has always said I have a
big mouth so it must be true. I'll try to do better next time.
Anyway, all the prerequisites are already on my system and cannot be
deleted. They were installed via Windows Update when I reformatted and did a
clean install trying to overcome my fingerprint reader problem. KB935509,
KB937287 and KB938371 cannot be uninstalled. My intent was to uninstall the
prerequisites in order to force the removal of my hidden SP1 update.
It doesn't really matter. I'll wait for the release to the general
public just to see what happens. I do appreciate your reply.

Mr. Green,

Yes, you are correct in assuming that I "restored" the SP1 update being
offered. I then rebooted to see if it would go away and it did not. I have
performed several reboots since that time. However, I guarantee you that I
have not downloaded it yet. I have since rehidden it in order to see how
Windows Update handles it when SP1 RTM is released to the general public.
Again, I did a clean install on 02/26/2008 and no SP1 Betas have been
installed on this machine since the clean install. No registry hacks have
been done.
I'm only wondering why the SP1 update was offered to me at this time
and whether it is the SP1 Refresh 2 or the SP1 RTM. I am running Ultimate
X86 so it was not mistakenly offered to me as it was for some X64 users. I
assume it is the RTM as it is listed as Windows Vista Service Pack 1,
KB936330. Curiosity, that is all.
However, if SP1 is indeed offered to me again, while the previous SP1
offering remains hidden, I will install the second SP1 offering and see what
happens with the one I have chosen to hide. Again, just curiosity as to how
the Windows Update process is going to handle this. No problems. No
complaints
I may decide to just reformat and do another clean install once it is
publicly released. It doesn't take that long to do as I always save my
programs on an external drive to make an install quicker since I do not have
to search websites for the downloads. Also, this machine, without SP1, is
incredibly fast and it only takes appx. 90 minutes for a reformat and clean
install, all additional updates included.

You could stop the Windows Update service, move all of the contents of
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\EventCache
to the Recycle Bin, then restart the WU service or, reboot the system,
and then see if SP1 is reoffered.
The Download subfolder is where SP1 is stored prior to installation.
Both folders are periodically 'cleaned up' due to a setting in the registry.

OK. I still don't understand why this is happening but here we go:
Hidden SP1 update NOT restored, stopped and disabled WUS, deleted contents
of download and event cache folders, re-enabled (Automatic Delayed) and
restarted WUS; waited 15 minutes and no updates offered, download and event
cache folders still empty; opened WU and checked for updates, no updates
available; closed and reopened WU and checked again, no updates available.
Rebooted, waited 15 minutes and no updates offered; opened WU and
checked for updates, no available updates, download and event cache folders
empty; RESTORED my hidden SP1, one entry now in event cache folder (I assume
it was the hidden SP1); stopped and disabled WUS, deleted entry in event
cache folder, re-enabled and restarted WUS; opened WU and SP1 entry listed
as available update, no entries in download and event cache folders.
Rebooted and five minutes later I was notified of available updates,
clicked on WU icon in taskbar and only the SP1 update was available; no
entries in download and event cache folders, no entries in Post Reboot Cache
folder and no entries in Reporting Events file (last event was when I had
hidden the SP1 update).
Stopped, disabled, re-enabled and started WUS, rebooted; WU icon in
taskbar again notified me of available updates, which was the same SP1; no
entries in any of the above listed folders and file.
Changed my WU settings to "Download updates but let me choose whether
to install them" and rebooted; waited 15 minutes and no available updates
icon in taskbar, opened WU and same SP1 update offered; no entries in any of
the same above listed folders or file. Changed WU settings back to "notify
me but don't download or install" and rebooted; WU icon appeared in taskbar,
notifying me of available updates, which was the SP1 only.
What I don't understand is how I can be notified of this available
update and have no entries in the Event Cache folder. Also, once I changed
my update settings the SP1 was not shown in any of the above listed folders.
It did not download as it should have. I'm going to go ahead and try to
install the update around 23:30 tonight once my Acronis backups are
finished. In fact, I don't know if the SP1 update is still a valid update as
it could be there in name only. If it will install I'll then know the
version and build numbers. I'll leave it on my system and see what happens
when WUS offers the SP1 RTM to the public.

Mr. Green,

I installed the SP1. I don't know if it is the final RTM or whether it
is the RC Refresh 2. Jane C. tells me the final build number is
6.0.6001.18000. The version of SP1 I was offered is: 6.0.6001-build lab:
6001.longhorn_rtm.080118-1840.
I'll see what happens when SP1 is released to the public. If this is
the RC Refresh 2 I'll simply uninstall it and then install the final
release.
