Vista; Step back in Time
I thought technology is suppose to advance, not regress. Can anyone explain
the philosophy behind Vista or at least provide articles that explains what
was sold to the boss to launch this OS?
Is it the big business theory? Most of the niceties we had in 98, 2000 & XP,
you can not find unless you have business vista. Did they think or
something? You don't have to have a business to have a need for the things
you don't get unless you have vista business.
Windows Vista is a step back in time beyond Windows 95. Actually, Windows 95
was far more superior than Vista is, from a layman's perspective. Yea, it
may be more secure but you know what, I'm a no body so who is going to hack
me? Yea, I may get the spy ware or junk without the security but you know
what, I still do because I'm not a business that has all the proxy blocks to
keep my family from downloading garbage they think is necessary. Oh yea,
they must have thought again and said people at home need this but did they
think outside the box and survey the general no body PC user? "This" doesn't
work, or is to much of a pain to figure out for laymen like myself. I have a
thought, push a SP3 for XP Pro and call it good for a few years.
Ok, thanks for letting me vent, I would appreciate some back ground on this
so I know how to play their chess game for future PC purchases.

The only obvious item missing from Home editions of Vista which appeared in
basic form in Win 98, 2000 and XP is FAX..

Re: Vista; Step back in Time
Thanks!
Maybe my old eyes are the problem. I am either not finding things
(applications or the settings panels) or cant get some of the things to
configure like I had them in 98, 00 and XP. I do notice you used the term
obvious.
Next stop, Vista for Dummies at the book store.

Maybe if you let us know what is missing, or you can't find, we could help.

Frankly I think this says more about you than Vista. Are you getting on a
bit, and unable to cope with change?

Re: Vista; Step back in Time
HAHAHA!!!
I like you. I am only 29 and live in a world where the only constant is
change and I'm a big pusher of change in my little world. I think you are
right though. I may have gotten use to MS's way of subtly changing OS's and
now we have vista which, in my opinion, is a drastic change. Hell, it may be
because I used XP pro for seven years and the next computer I bought only
had Vista Home Basic.
I was reading an article earlier by someone that said it best.
"Because people in the Market do not install or buy operating systems.
> They buy "a computer" and use whatever comes on it. Most people are
> completely oblivious as to what the it is they are actually using. As long
> as they can click a little pretty button and their pictures come up or
> their music plays they are happy. They don't care about how or why this
> happens nor would most ever be able to even comprehend."
Also,
Someone else said, and I paraphrase because I deleted the message already,
This is Microsoft's way of making people buy the upgrades.
I really believe the root cause is I prematurely bought a computer with
preloaded software (vista home basic) instead of buying a Dell platform and
loading XP Pro or MS 2000 Server on it. Truth is, I'm a layman intermediate.
I was an additional duty Client Support Administrator (CSA) for my job only
a year ago before being transferred to another country where my new office
has a CSA where they use different front ends to manage accounts. Now I can
only learn as I go and provide basic advise to help at work. At home is a
different story with Vista.
Thanks SteveT for helping me put this in perspective. However, you are still
outside looking in, tell me what you think now unless I hit the nail on the
head.

Re: Vista; Step back in Time
Actually I was having a hard time thinking of any on my toes but just
remembered one. Where is the calendar in Windows Mail like in Outlook. Also,
I have another post for work grouping my PCs that Malke has helped on. I am
still finding it hard to use his link's instructions and making progress
with them.
As far as other issues, would you prefer I reply as I remember or find them?

Vista Home Premium has almost all of the features of anything before it PLUS
Media Center. As a home version, it still does NOT have the ability to join
a Domain, but then neither did XP Home. It also lacks security features
which most home users would not know how to or ever likely use..
The Start menu is more or less the same as XP other than the fact that some
folders are not prefixed by 'My' any more.
The majority of applets which have seen service in earlier Windows are still
to be found in 'All Programs - Accessories'..
Right clicking on 'Computer' and selecting 'manage' still takes you to
Computer management, Disk management etc a la Win 2000/XP
CTRL-SHIFT-ESC takes you to Windows Task Manager..
Start > Control Panel takes you to the easiest Windows Control Panel since
CP ever appeared..
No version/edition of Windows has ever or likely will ever include Microsoft
Office, MS Money, MS Works, MS MapPoint, MS Streets and Trips, MS Visual
Studio, WordPerfect, Lotus Organizer etc. If ever you gotten any of these
installed on a computer, you either did it yourself or it was part of an OEM
bundle..
WinHlp32.exe is no longer shipped with Vista, and help files for some older
programs/applications will not display, but there is a fix here..
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
If you want help, the best way to get it is to explain the problem(s)
clearly. You may even save yourself the cost of a book, which you probably
will only ever look at a few times as you will see that the UI changes over
XP and Win 2000 are really not that much different, even though the
mechanics below the surface are.
