Hibernate fails after installing SP1
I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 running Vista Home Premium. Since I got the computer, hibernate and suspend have both worked fine. But, I recently updated to SP1. Since installing the update, I haven't been able to come out of hibernate successfully. The computer hibernates correctly, but when I start it back up, I get a message saying that Windows did not shut down properly and asking if I want to start Windows normally, in safe mode, etc. Sleep still works properly.
I tried uninstalling SP1, but still couldn't hibernate after uninstalling it, so I went ahead and put SP1 back on. I've also tried rebuilding my BCD using the bootrec tool, but have had no luck fixing this. Any ideas? Thanks!

How about a system Restore to a time before the upgrade or if that does
not help use your full backup copy.

When I installed SP1, it made it so that I can't go to any system restore points from before the install. I did talk with Dell tech support and they said I'd have to reinstall, but if there's a way to fix this without reinstalling, I'd prefer that.

I've already PM'd xslaugh so this is for the benefit of everyone else:

I found a solution to this problem after searching Microsoft's technet Vista SP1 forum.
Re: Hibernation fails after installation of SP 1

I had the same problem, where I would hibernate Vista SP1 and I would see a message like "Windows did not shut down successfully," or no message at all, and the system would just start as if I didn't even hibernate.

Check out the link to see what I'm talking about.

search words:
hibernate broken
hibernate failed
hibernate fails
hibernate problem
hibernate problems
vista sp1
bootmgr

popchoc,

Thank you very much for posting the link to the solution so all could check
it out. I've been looking for the solution for darn well near two days now.
Fixed in five minutes after printing out that thread. Ironically enough, I
updated two identical Sony VAIO laptops (hardware and software configurations
the same) and only one stopped hibernating correctly. How on earth that can
be, I don't know. Seems almost random.
