Increasing System Restore Point Size?
I would like to use Restore Points on my laptop, but I'm having quite an
unusual problem. When a Restore Point is created, it starts out at around
48MB, yet for some reason, this Restore Point continually grows in size, I
know this because I ran the cmd.exe as soon as the point was created. It
then continually grows at a rate of 10kbs. I have a 250GB hard drive with
2.4GB allocated to shadow copies, it's only about 1%, but I have a ton of
games, music, and videos and really cannot spare much more space. At the
rate that the shadow copy grows, it fills up the 2.4GB in about 3 hours. I
know I could change the settings to automatically create Restore Points every
3 hours, but then there really wouldn't be a use for one Restore Point that
was created only 3 hours prior. In the even that an error might occur, I
don't feel as if I have any back-up. What can I do besides a full on system
back-up to keep my computer settings? Is this normal that the shadow copy
space continues to grow? I've had a lot of problems with nVidia drivers and
I finally got everything situated perfectly and I just want some reassurance.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Mike,

System Restore will normally automatically create a restore point at
various times. Restore points are created once per day and before
significant system events such as program or driver installation. If you
do not feel this is the case, then you might try turning System Restore
off then back on to reset it.

If you would like to adjust how much space that System Restore can use
on your hard drive, then this will show you how.

Hope this helps you,
Shawn

Re: Increasing System Restore Point Size?
Brink, I've done both of these things about fifty times, and they work just
as they should, but that is not the problem. The problem is that I have only
one restore point that continues to grow and grow, and if a new restore point
isn't created before the time (about three hours) that it fills up my maximum
space allocated, it is deleted. I am wondering if this is normal that one
single restore point continues to get bigger and bigger until it is deleted.
If it is, what else can I do besides set aside more hard drive space for
restore points? If this is not normal, what ca I do to fix it?

Mike,

No, this is not normal. You should have multiple restore points with
different dates and times on them. Vista will still delete the oldest
one as well though when the space is filled up and a new one is created.

Could this be a Backup file instead of a Restore Point? They can grow
like that.

I do not know what else to do other than to see if a reinstall will fix
it.

Sorry,
Shawn

Re: Increasing System Restore Point Size?
Brink,
No it's definitely a restore point. I turned off windows system restore
since last night, and just now turned it back on again, and I'm still having
the same problem. I can upload pictures of the growth in command prompt if
that will make it any clearer. At this point I think a re installation would
probably be in my best interest. How can I go about doing this?

Mike,

1) If you have a Full Vista installation DVD:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/11...ion-vista.html

2) If you have a Upgrade Vista installation DVD:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/68...ade-vista.html

3) If you have a Recovery installation DVD, then it is the same as one.

4) If you have a Recovery partition and no installation DVD, then you
usually press F10 or F12 during every second during boot-up until you
get a Recover Manager screen. Check your computer's documents for it's
exact procedure, but it should be similar to this.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: Increasing System Restore Point Size?
Brink,
Thanks for all the advice. I have a set of Recovery Discs, but they're from
when I first got the laptop, and since then I've installed many programs, and
updated a lot of system options and I really don't feel like going through
the monotonous procedure of reinstalling Vista and all of my programs. I
think I'll just turn off System Restore and hope for the best. If there is an
installer for just Windows System Restore, or a third party application you
can recommend that would be greatly appreciated. As for this growing shadow
copy issue, if any solution arises please let me know, as at this point I'm
more curious as to why it's happening than I am concerned about my computer's
safety. Thanks again.

Mike,

If you have the Vista Enterprise, Ultimate, or Business edition, then
you can use the "Complete PC backup and restore" feature in Vista
instead.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/99...-computer.html

If not, then Acronis True Image us a great backup program. You can try
it for a 15-day trial period.

'Complete hard disk drive copy, cloning and image backup software:
computer files and disk copying'

That Acronis program sounds like exactly what I need. I'll give that a whirl
and hopefully everything is fine. Thanks a lot!
