Windows Update taskbar icon

I have Vista set to inform me when new updates are available, but the
icon showing that new important updates are available never shows up in
the taskbar (it is not set to hidden).

I have to manually click on Windows Update on the start menu to check if
there are new updates available.

I'm running Vista Ultimate as a Standard User with UAC turned on.

Any suggestions?

Walter,

Hopefully you have resolved this by now. If not I was having the same issue and could find no help. Then I got the bright idea of disabling the Windows Update and then reenabling. The ICON is now back.

Specific steps:

1. Open Window Update
2. Select Change Setting Option
3. Select Never Check for Updates Option
4. Wait for Window Notification Icon stating Windows Update has been disabled.
5. Repeat steps 1 & 2 above.
6. Choose Check for Updates but let me choose ...
7. The Windows Update Icon will reappear after it finishes checking for updates.
