Windows errors when creating ad-hoc network
Hi,
I am trying to create an ad-hoc network between 2 laptops, one running Vista
and another XP. I am able to see the XP machine in the Network map, but am
unable to ping either ways (i.e. from vista to xp and vice versa). And
offcourse, I get "Path not found" and "Access denied" messages when I use Net
view \\ipaddress.

I had done the following:
- Enabled File & print sharing
- Installed LLTD on the XP machine
- Set the IPv4 settings as "NetBios over TCP/IP" (as mentioned in another
post here)

But nothing worked so far. I even tried Network Magic - no luck.

Now I tried to delete the Ad-hoc network and create another one, but I keep
getting the message "Windows could not set up the network".

Any suggestions please?

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.
How to give Permissions are there, too.
If you are running Norton, etc’s Firewall, check its settings.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard.

In addition to Mick's suggestions, I always ensure that I have the same user
account on all my boxes... with the same password.

RE: Windows errors when creating ad-hoc network
Well, I have done these, but didn't help. Anyway, the issue I am facing
currently is that after deleting (supposedly) my previous ad-hoc network,
Windows is not creating another one. Whenever I try to set up an ad-hoc
network, it gives me a message "Windows could not set up <networkname>". And
no more information as to why it failed.
