Red X's
I have installed Ultimate and have found that in Help the "Icon" by
hyperlinks are only red crosses. All other icons are OK, when help is
connected to the internet.
I have tried SFC but this did not help.
Any ideas, thanks

Re: Red X's
This problem seems to affect many Vista users. I've been asked why the
icons are missing in the Help and Support file in Vista. I tell others
that I am also experiencing the same problem and not sure at this time
why its occurring.

This exists in Vista's Registry and the icons appear as red X's.

Re: Red X's
Hi, thanks Ramesh and found that two keys were missing and luckily I had a
RC1 installation on Virtual and exported the keys from there and all is well.
Thanks again and thanks to Mark for his comments.

Re: Red X's
I have this same problem and I clicked the link for the fix but I don't know
how to do what it says I should do.
How do I check to see if I have a
"Content Type" value with content "image/png" in your HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.png
registry key?

Re: Red X's
Cheryl, I had the same problem with my VISTA Home Premium. Ramesh, MS MVP,
sent me this link and instructions. Make sure that you open it in Internet
Explorer 7. Hope this works for you, too. Ramesh will probably answer your
question with far more expertise than I. Good luck. Jef
"Jef,
This happens if the "Content Type" setting for .PNG file types is broken.
Download a REG file from Daniel Martin's site here:
http://winvista.mvps.org/Ficheros/PNG.reg
Download and save it to Desktop. Right-click on the file and choose Merge.

Re: Red X's
Hi Sheryl,
Click start, type regedit and hit <enter>. The "folders" here are registry
keys, so be careful. Go to the indicated key (and that's period_png, not
just png), click on it and see if there is a string in the right pane for
ContentType whose value (double click if you can't see it) of image/png.

RE: Red X's
This issue is affecting me too. IE does not display .png images. All other
images display correctly. My registry has the mentioned entry, but it still
does not work.
I did some testing and found that if I log on as another user (IE: guest),
then .png images display in IE7. Also, if I run IE as Administrator, .png's
display. Furthermore, if I turn of UAC, .png's display.
Only when I am logged on to my account, with UAC enabled, the .png's are
blocked from IE. Everything else is working fine. I have tried re-setting
IE back to factory settings, disabling all add-ins, turning off protected
mode and phishing filters. My Multimedia settings in Advanced Options are
correct.
Lots of articles point to re-registering the pngfilt.dll file, but it is
registered properly with the latest version.
I believe this is a direct result of a problem with UAC. I still want to
keep UAC enabled, but I would like to correct this problem without running IE
as Admin all the time.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Jim
