Vista use more than 30% CPU in idle
It is a Vista Professional 64 bits.
I don't remember installing anything special that created the issue. The
system is now spending 30% of its time (on a Quad processor !) in a svchost
process that runs the following programme (sorry it is in French).

Wudfsvc Windows Driver Foundation - Infrastucture de pilote mode-utilisateur
WPDBusEnum Service Enumerateur d'appareil mobile
WdSystemHost Hote system diagnostics
Netman Connexions reseau
hidserv Acces du peripherique d'interface utilisateur
BMDMmgt Service ReadyBoost
CscService Fichiers hors connexion
AudioEndpointBuilder Generateur de points de terminaison du service Audio
Windows

I tried to stop some of these services, without success, and I am afraid to
continue stopping these to find the culprit. And when I know who it is, I
still don't know why and how to fix it.

I have Windows live OneCare, and the Adobe CS3 installed, could it be one of
these. Some of the errors (logs by the system) pointed to the Intel ship set
inf file and the RAID driver, I updated theses and all the drivers without
success.

Any ideas? the system is so slow that it is not usable, and it is instable
and would not shut down.

I hate to redo the system, but right now it seems the only alternative,
unless on of you guys has a bright idea.

Thanks, Francois.

Re: Vista use more than 30% CPU in idle
Bonjuor Francois,

This may well be linked to a bad .dll or even a worm/trojan attached to one
of the processes running under svchost. I would try a good .dll checker and
complete a full virus scan from within safemode.

If that doesnt work, then I would disable each of the items under svchost in
turn and restart after each one. That way you will identify which of the
elements are at fault.

Re: Vista use more than 30% CPU in idle
Bob,

Thanks for your inputs. I am scanning my system right now. I doubt any
worm/trojan as I had OneCare running all the time on my system, unless...
OneCare let it through.
I'll have trouble restarting between each one, as my system won't stop and I
have to power it off, writing wrong stuff on the disc causing the RAID
software to check the volume... 2 or 3 hours at least each time!

Anyway, thanks,
Francois

I have seen this from some WIRELESS network adaptors...

I spent lots of time debuging it and found a work-around..

tell me if you have wireless so I can then explain...

Re: Vista use more than 30% CPU in idle
Extrapolating on Bob's suggestion why don't you do this:

Download SpyBot Search & Destroy which is a free download (from Germany) and
run it. It is superb. I've used it on all my machines especially ones with
heavy Internet traffic. They are very up to date.

They ask for donations but it is up to you. It is not a prerequisite for
using the app. It will never shut down it you don't donate. You will have to
download updates manually every time before using. It is your
responsibility.

Yet, another option I've discovered lately is just simply leave your machine
overnight for a week with the option to download windows updates set
nightly. It may well repair itself. I've experienced such strange things
first hand.

Re: Vista use more than 30% CPU in idle
Alex,

Thanks for the advices. I have used SpyBot on other occasion, and you are
right it is a great tool. But the system is too unstable at this point, I'll
try a Repair, and will end up reinstalling from scartch, I think.
The big issue to try things, is that it does not stop, and the power failure
cause disc errors on my RAID configuration (I recover the errors, but have to
wait 3 to 5 hours each time!).

Thanks anyway,
Francois

Re: Vista use more than 30% CPU in idle
It might be the CSCService (offline files). Go into task manager/services,
right-click on cscservice and select stop. My CPU (on Centrino Duo) is
always at 100%. Can't even use the computer when it's enabled.

Re: Vista use more than 30% CPU in idle
Eriq,

Thanks for the advice. As I was not using any offline files on this system,
I did shut down the service without any benefit. I will never know what or
how I got there. I just hope it will not happen again. I did a fresh
re-install from scratch, so far it is OK (but a lot of work), and I had
Internet exporer crached twice already!
I suspect a faulty application, I had Apple iTunes, MS Live OneCare and many
Adobe programs. On Vista64, I suspect one of these application to go wild and
destroy something. Any comments are still appreciated.

Thanks, Francois.
