easy transfer from xp to vista
I have a xp computer that was supposed to be a plug and play. I gave away the
keyboard and mouse I had on it, figuring I could use my new dell keyboard and
mouse. I can turn on the xp and I get the password screen. Because I do not
have mouse or keyboard that will work I am not sure how I can transfer my
important files and pictures.
I have the easy transfer cable and software from Belkin. If I hook the two
computers together with the cable, will I be able to manipulate my xp
computer via the vista? Does the xp have to have the software? Help!!!

No...that won't work!

Pull the HD from your old machine and temporarily slave it to the new one...
you can easily transfer your data that way.

If you have any data in a user profile you may need to take ownership

If there certain task that you required to accomplish on the computer you
are transferring from, then you will need at least a keyboard. So just
borrow a keyboard and mouse that works.

How do you slave it? Do you add it to the vista drive?

Re: easy transfer from xp to vista
I had a feeling I should keep those items. I did not follow that thought,
though. I had purchased a mouse that worked immediatly before we decided to
buy a new system and I just naturally assumed. thanks

If both drives are IDE you can temporarily disconnect the cdrom or dvd and
put the old drive there...
just be sure to set the jumpers correctly.

If you are not sure about the jumpers...then just put the drive on the
second ribbon cable and make sure nothing else is connected to it
