A. The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

B. The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

C. Be sure the computer is clean:

D. If the problem has always occurred and the machine is
virus/malware-free, make sure all drivers are the latest. See below for
general drivers information.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.

E. If none of the above is applicable (or has been done), do clean-boot
troubleshooting to find the program or process causing the issue. If you
have McAfee or Norton products, replace them with a better and less
invasive antivirus such as NOD32, Kaspersky, or Avast (free).

RE: Shut Down Issue in Vista
you wouldnt happen to have internet access through Verizon Fios because I had
that exact same problem when I had service through them, I moved and got some
dinky local service (charter) and I have everything set up exactly the
same...and the problem stopped entirely....
