Question : XP or Vista?
Is it advisable to update now or would an intelligent person hold off
for another 6 months or so?

Re: Question : XP or Vista?
Hi,

Depends on what you are using the pc for. Are you relying heavily on older
software or a legacy program? If so, you may be better off with XP unless
you are sure it is supported in Vista. Then there's the hardware. Is it of
recent make or vintage? Again, older hardware may not have drivers available
or even be capable of running Vista in a satisfactory manner. I run a mix of
Vista/XP/Linux machines, the installed OS on each depends on the
capabilities of the system and the software I choose to run on them. Do some
research on what you need, then decide on which suits you better.

Please read my review to find out if Windows Vista is right for you, there
are things to take into consideration. If you are in the middle of a
project, I would advise holding off until it is finished, run the Upgrade
advisor on your computer to ensure your device and applications are
compatible or if you might need to upgrade components before installing.

Re: Question : XP or Vista?

listen even more carefully....

Upgrade to Vista if you have done everything that Rick said.

Never ever listen to people that talk about Vista like kiddie clause
did.

He doesnt know how to properly use a computer otherwise Vista would
work for him the way it does for those of us that do know how to use
one.

Vista is awesome and yes now is the time to upgrade.

Frank upgraded, so I'd say hold off.

Re: Question : XP or Vista?
If your computer is more than say 18 months old, I would never even attempt
to upgrade it.

If you use your computer for serious work (i.e. it's a tool and not an
amusement) then I would wait.

If you just want to mess around with the new stuff then go ahead.

You may get a suggestion to try dual booting. While this can certainly be
made to work, the result is often more trouble than it is worth.

Although Vista is probably going to work OK on a new machine with state of
the art hardware...
If you are currently running XPsp2 now on "slightly" older H/W and it works
fine...
then I'd definately not upgrade.
I gave Vista a very good tryout for 90 days..then dumped it.

Though it certainly did work...on my machine, XP ran a lot faster.

There's not much point in waiting - Vista was a bit fragile when launched,
but has improved enormously over the past several months as the updates have
been rolling out. My installation, at least, is completely stable and I'm
delighted with it.

No - the real decision isn't about waiting / not waiting, it's about "Is my
hardware and software compatible with Vista?".

Most modern hardware should be fine, but make sure every program you intend
to install is Vista-compatible (go to the manufacturer's Web site to check).
Many of them have released patches or updated versions for Vista.

If you don't, you'll be able to run most applications in the various
compatibility modes, but you'll get too many tiresome UAC prompts.

I run Vista on my workstation (and XP on my laptop which isn't Vista
compatible) and there's no way I'd go back to XP now.

I don't know that intelligence has much to do with it - more a matter of
educating oneself. Many consultants are telling their clients not to go
vista at this point. Not because you will have problems, there are some
vista installations serving their users without huge issues - BUT you
can't count on it. There is a high degree of liklihood that you would have
significant issues.

I'd recommend against vista now.
