I'm Getting a Linux PC For Xmas. ****!!!!!!!! PLEASE HELP ME!!!
My Mac-Mini bit the dust after I spilled a bottle of pop on it so I
have been using the schools community lab computers for my video work.

My little sister just dimed on mom and pop and told me they bought me
some Linux PC from Walmart for Christmas.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...ty+Information

What the ****?

What am I going to use that POS for?

I'm studying media production at college and most people are using Mac
machines with a small few using Windows notebooks.
The schools labs are all Macs.
I have a lot of money invested in Adobe Premier, Logic Audio and a
slew of other applications and even though these are student versions,
they are still expensive.

I don't want to hurt my parents feelings, but is there any way
possible that I can run my Mac software on this machine?
Even if I had to purchase Windows and Windows software, can that be
done or am I stuck with a machine that will only run Linux?

I barely know wtf Linux is?
All I know for sure is that the geeks down at the computing center are
always jabbering about Linux this and Linux that.
All the girls laugh at them.
I suspect they will be laughing at me and my Linux computer as well.

So how do I get out of this without hurting my parents feelings?
I thought of purchasing new components and stuffing them into the case
so from the outside it looks the same.

My parents are clueless about Linux which is probably why they got
sucked into this boat anchor in the first place.

Help!

Chill out babe. You need to remove that box of Vista from your cunt
and relax a little bit.
Maybe Santa will bring you a box of candles or something?
As for the poor soul stuck with a Linux PC, I feel sorry for him. He
would have been better off getting a brick or something. At least it
would be the makings of the start of a new home.
What is he going to do with Linux?
Especially since he is a media student. Linux is as useless as a cunt
on you in that respect.
Oh, I see you have one of those gender nuetral names.
Too bad for you.

Don't waste your time.
Linux is a lost cause.
You will never be able to do with Linux what you can do with OSX.
Why not just level with your parents and tell them the system will not
work for you?

Whatever you do, send Linux to the curb. It will suck your time, waste
your life and make a laughing stock out of you amongst your peers.
Go OSX!

After zillions of lines of meaningless, profanity-filled, absolutely
useless "help" from who knows what they are up to. I will give you
some advice.

You can buy a copy of windows, reformat the hard drive and install
windows on your present, you can even borrow a copy of OS X and ask
your geek friend to help your hacking that piece of software onto your
linux machine(which would be illegal but doable). Either way, you will
be able to your whatever you were using on your old mac mini and avoid
the fate of becoming a linux nerd in the eyes of your friends. (love
linux or not, having a nerd label on your back sucks)

If they actually got that machine for you, it's quite a feat, it's
been sold out for a while now. WalMart puts out these low-end PCs
every year around the beginning of the school year to help close the
"Digital Divide". They don't have them at retail, and the web-order
machines sell out very quickly. The manufacturer has a hard time
keeping up with the demand.

Perhaps they are getting you the ASUS Eee 4G. It's the size of a
large PDA with the power of a laptop. Or maybe they got you an OLPC -
get one/give one. I've ordered one myself.

> What the ****?

Very impressive vocabulary, did you learn that in college, or was you
mom just a career soldier or sailor?

> What am I going to use that POS for?

Lots of things.

> I'm studying media production at college and most people are using Mac

Will your teacher accept MPEG Video products? Linux media editing
applications are more like the ones used in real video production
environments. In some cases, they are even stripped down versions of
the software used by companies like ILM and Pixar.

> The schools labs are all Macs.

Those are good products, and you might use them for Indie films, and
student productions, but it's likely that if you are working for a
large commercial studio, you will be using systems based on Unix. In
fact, films like Shrek were done on Linux. The first major film to
use Linux was Titanic. Linux did all of the rendering work as well as
much of the storage and physics calculations to make the water look
more real, to make the people look like they were really sliding down
the deck, and many other simulation that were to dangerous to do in
"live action". There was a small segment done with Windows - the
cheesy animation at the beginning of the movie where they are on the
ship and showing the old lady their estimate of what happened on the
ship.

Remember that much of this technology was developed by Silicon
Graphics Incorporated (SGI). SGI now makes a whole line of Linux
workstations which they sell to commercial film studios.

You probably couldn't afford the Pixar versions of this software, but
there are some packages that are available for free, or very
reasonably priced.

Some, like Audacity, and blender are included with most Linux
distributions. Others have to be downloaded and can be upgraded for a
reasonable price.

Here are a few media packages available.

> I don't want to hurt my parents feelings, but is there any way

Not Legally. There are hacks that can let some PC machines run
pirated OS/X but Apple only grants licenses for their machines. Keep
in mind that if you are caught with a pirated OS/X machine, the
penalty can be up to 5 years in federal prison per application
pirated. If your parents are trying to squeeze out the cash for
college, I don't think their plans for you included a long-term stay
in Levenworth and a criminal record that will limit your ability to
get honest work.

> Even if I had to purchase Windows and Windows software, can that be
> done or am I stuck with a machine that will only run Linux?

That's easier to do. You can purchase Windows XP professional, for
about $259. Or you can purchase a student version for a more
discounted price. Given that your parents have a tight budget, they
only spent $200 on the computer, you might want to consider getting a
job and buying your own computer. These days you could get a machine
with Vista Home Premium for about $400. It won't be legal to run that
professional editing software, but it will run Windows video games and
let you PLAY proprietary DRM controlled multimedia.

> I barely know wtf Linux is?

Maybe you should find out more about it before you assume that it
can't do what you want.

Linux has software to let you create the music, feed the music into
synthesizers, synthesize the music, mix the tracks, and package it in
the most commonly used distribution formats, even has software to let
you master standard CDs.

Linux has software to help you edit your own live actions, add special
effects, even generate 3D and green-screen effects.

You might have to do a bit of extra learning, but then again, that's
why you are in college isn't it?

> All I know for sure is that the geeks down at the computing center are
> always jabbering about Linux this and Linux that.

You might want to talk to them. At minimum, they might be willing to
buy your Linux PC for a reasonable price.
They might also be willing to help you get the software you need, and
help you get it installed correctly.

> All the girls laugh at them.

All the girls laughed at nerds like Bill Gates too. At my 30 year
high school reunion, it was the nerds who were laughing hardest,
laughing about their overstuffed bank accounts.

> I suspect they will be laughing at me and my Linux computer as well.

They laughed at Columbus, John Adams, Thomas Edison, and even Bill
Gates. They even laughed at Steven Spielberg - who is laughing now?

> So how do I get out of this without hurting my parents feelings?

You don't. When you get lemons, learn to make lemonade. When I was a
kid, I wanted a ham radio rig. What I got was some surplus equipment
and junk radios. I ended up building my own ham radio rig, and
learned much more about electronics in the process.

Don't tell me, you beat Marconi to wireless but he stole all the ideas
from your locker at school, took all the credit and the system ended
up being called Marconi wireless instead of Ballard wireless.
