restart at login screen

When I boot up my pc, it gets to the login screen, then restarts. Does the
same thing if I turn off reboot at system crash.
If I get in quick enough, and type my password in, itll try to log in, but
come up with the error:
The group policy service failed to login. The media may be write protected.
if I press F8, and use Boot from last known good configuration, it works fine.
but I have to do this every time I start my pc up.
I have put in the Vista disk and done a system repair, which hasnt helped at
all.

Any ideas?

Are you able to boot into Safe Mode? If yes, then it could indicate
that perhaps a driver is malfunctioning, a startup program is causing
the restart, or malware has hijacked some critical startup service. More
than likely a driver or service, because the "reset" happens even before
you get to the login screen.

If No, then use the F8 boot options, and use the "Disable Restart On
System Failure" option. If it is a BSOD you're getting, then this option
will allow you to see it and further diagnose what the problem is.

What happens (if you have a Vista DVD) when you try Startup Repair? Have
you tried Last Known Good also from F8?

Ok, but you haven't answered my question: Can you get into Safe Mode?

If you can, the login to your account and use MSCONFIG to disable all
non-microsoft services, and all startup programs. If a safe-mode login
also fails, then there's a 99% possibility that you hav some malware
that has hijacked your system either by overwriting WINLOGON.EXE or
USERINIT.EXE

Hi Marcus,

You can try a Startup Repair to see if it will fix the problem. This
tutorial will show you how.

If that does not work, then you can do a Repair Install. This will
allow you to repair your Vista installation without loosing your files,
settings, and programs. You can see how to do it in this tutorial.

Same thing recently started happening to me - I cannot get into safe
mode at all - screen gets about halfway through showing all the files
it's loading then reboots.
When trying regular login, I've found it doesn't matter what if you
type a password or not. If you type one, you get the message listed in
the first post. If you don't type one, the cursor will blink 9-10 times
then lock for a second and then reboot. I tired removing the password
all together thinking it was corrupted somehow. This worked ONE (and
ONLY one) time. Next time I rebooted, I see the MS globe, then the
vista Welcome screen for a split second, then reboot.
F8 - Last Know Good Config works to get me in everytime. Tried
Disabling restart after a crash - that didn't do anything. I think
that may because (as was suggested) this isn't a 'crash' - the
machine's being TOLD to reboot.
More info: Shortly before this rebooting thing started, I was having
an issue where whatever my active window was (browser or explorer) it
would constantly refresh - so much so that I couldn't even type
anything in any search, URL or run boxes. If I brought up Start/Run
and tried to run MSCONFIG, I'd get 'MS' in, then the window would
refresh, erasing what I'd just typed.
I had been using 'Avast' antivirus. It suddenly couldn't be started
because of an 'invalid skin'. Once I uninstalled it, I can no longer
re-install it.
I have XP on another drive in this computer, I can get into it fine,
and ran several virus and spy/adware checks from there. It found
several things - tracking cookies, a few adware things, but nothing
really 'major'. I have AVG antirvirus running now, AdWare Alert,
Spybot S&D, Windows Defender, and have also run TrendMicro's Housecall
- all are now showing clean.

Any help would be appreciated - this is the first time I've found
someone else online with the same problem, and I've been searching for
DAYS for info on this.
