Boy oh boy
Downloading 16 updates for vista ult., 42 mBytes, from windows update. Took
12 minutes.
I have - that is I pay for - comcast's 6 mbits a second down. I get 2-4
mbits a second. At 12 minutes, this particular download came in at 3.5
mBytes per minute = ~28 mbits /minute.
I can't bear to do the rest of the math. Life would be so much more
pleasant if either or both microsoft & comcast could do a few more things
right.
ugh.

12 minutes! You're lucky 16 updates would take me best part of a day. WU for
me is like watching hair grow, and I have a 8Mb connection.

Its probably your provider or maybe the time of day.
I get over 10Mbits/s from wu in the UK (15M connection speed).
It is quite expensive at £10 pm though.

Unfortunately it's not. Actual downloads take seconds, I have no problems
with speed whatsoever. It's the searching for, initialising and installing
that takes hours. Something's not working as it should with WU on my Vista
( I dual boot with XP and WU is very quick). I've tried unregistering and
reregistering the WU service but that didn't help.

I think it's MS servers combined with Vista. I've noticed others from the
UK commenting on downloading from MS (gigabytes) and they often cite speeds
faster than those in US. That said, I have to add: you never know with
comcast. No matter how unlikely it may seem, they may be the cause of *any*
problem. :-/ And I say that as a neighbor - I live about 15 miles from
their World HQ.
But 10 pounds - 22 dollars or so, correct? That's what dialup costs here.

Correct. It does have a download limit of about 250G a month so it isn't
the best value if you download a lot, Virgin media is probably the best for
file sharing at about $40 pm with a limit in the Terra bytes range. I
wouldn't contemplate dial up, you can get a 3G mobile connection for $40 pm
at 1.8M, "unlimited" but with a FUP that puts a limit of a few gig pm, they
are rolling out 7.6M services ATM.

Re: Boy oh boy
perhaps if you would limit your stupid posts here you would save some
bandwidth....

Perhaps if you did as you say.

250 G download no problem, but as someone sort of mentioned, the price is
amazing. Costs me $60 a month for 384kb up and 6mb down from Comcast: where
I live, it's absolutely their cheapest plan. Congrats on UK broadband.
