Another very good alternative to Word is Open Office. It's free and
compatible with Word files.

it is not compatible with the latest docx files that word 2007 produces..
unless openoffice has been updated to include this

It's not "Compatible" - it will open and convert many standard, without
special formatting, documents, but it could also mean that you'll have
trouble interacting with people that you send the document back to.

In general, if you're interacting with people that use MS Office when
you want MS Office or you will force them to work with the lowest common
format supported between the two Office applications - most often this
means the simple RTF format.

You are correct that it is not 100% compatible. But in five years of using
it, I've never had a problem either direction - any potential user can
certainly try it to see if there is an issue.

Most files should be sent in RTF rather than a proprietary format. BTW -
not too long ago I produced all the formatting for our church directory
for Olan Mills - they only support MS PowerPoint and a few other
proprietary formats. I did the entire thing using OpenOffice Impress and
they had zero problems.

But it's not a Microsoft product. Using it may void your warranty.

All you need to do is download the free MSoffice 2007 compatibility pack.

Or do what I do and tell the sender to save the bloody file in a format
that most people can open.

Using a FREE product will void what warranty?

Olan Mills, the photo studio? You sound like you are from my neck of
the woods, Ray.
